My mom's cat Mookie is about 16, almost 17. Around10 months ago she was doing this thing where she kept squatting and then leave a little spot of blood on the carpet. She did this for a couple days, and kept licking around her tail. I remember googling this, and someone said that too much fish in a cat's diet can make them have a urinary tract infection and my mom had been feeding her fish wet food, and fish dried food. She took her off the fish and put her on chicken, and it seemed to stop. Just today she started doing it again, and I was just wondering if this another urinary tract thing (if that's what it originally was), or if it is something of more concern. I realize you guys aren't vets, and neither am, I but I still thought I should ask. I read on the internet it could be kidney cancer, but I mean I could have a sore neck and WebMD tell me it's a stroke so.... Let me know!

I'm no expert, but any kind discharge of blood to me would warrant a visit to the vets.  How is Mookie otherwise? Does she seem as if she's in pain?  Experiencing discomfort?

There are Members with knowledge regarding this matter, I'm sure will chime in shortly.

Best to you Mookie...

I was over yesterday and she was fine. Playful and happy as always. Today she seems restless, keeps walking around and squatting, then licking herself in that area.

I personally would call the vet.  With my boy, years ago when he was acting strange with "his" nether regions" and couldn't urinate, he had crystals, that ended up being serious and he undergone surgery.

In January my girl was squatting all over and it ended up being crystals, and she's going back for possible kidney damage.

I would make that appointment with the vet.  Blood is never good.

good luck, I wish you all well.

Ah, I forgot to mention she keeps going to the liter box over and over as if to pee, but instead just bleeds so crystals sounds like a possibility....

It could be any number of urinary issues, but she definitely needs to see a vet immediately. You don't want her becoming blocked and she is likely in a lot of pain.

has she been to vet yet? they will want to palpate her then xrays to see if any blockage. Then give Sub Fluids which is saline solution under the skin-this will be the best thing for her-she is in pain and dehydrated more than likely. Then they will give or send home with something for pain-or at least the younger vets seem to treat for pain more than the older traditional ones-in my experience.

But then they will want to try to get a sample of urine to look under the microscope.

Crystals can be from food. there are two different types. Chaning her off fish was a good thing to do. Add wet food to diet and adding water to the food will help increase fluids. Cats bladders are like a dessert and they don't drink like we do-so anything to encourage more drinking is beneficial for her.

In the wild they never needed to drink much water due to their prey having a high % of water so that's how they hydrate in the wild.

I highly recommend immediate vet. When you call them tell them she is straining in the box and bloody. they will at least in my case-fast track her and allow you to bring her right in.
