Starting a new thread on food intolerance. I have a new cat, Rocky, who I find cannot eat poultry. This is a big bummer after just losing my Birdie. More vet bills. Now Royal Canin venison cat food at 2.65 a can. Rocky is a big boy and need one and half cans a day. That is 125 a month. I don't think he will tolerate the non prescription food.  He didn't do well with the Dick Van Patten venison and pea. Any ideas?

Have you tried raw? Radcat has Venison, Lamb, and Beef that he may like. Depending on how many ounces a day he eats, I'm guessing you could feed fully raw for around $60-$70 a month. It does contain ground eggshells as a calcium source, but many cats who can't tolerate chicken can still eat egg shells.

I'm trying not to change anything for a while and just let his system settle down. I'll look into your brands. Skeeves me out a bit for some reason, but I could try.

Are you entirely sure this is a true poultry allergy and not just the brand of food you were feeding? Not all poultry meat is created equal, especially when we're talking about commercial pet food. Most brands use lower quality meats and fillers which are usually the culprit, a true poultry allergy is pretty rare. I can tell you that most people that have cats with true food allergies don't feed RX foods. They're no good. You can easily make your own food for half the cost of RX foods, or buy way, way better food.

With that said, you'd do better feeding the least processed food possible, so I would look into better canned food over feeding the garbage RX food.

I agree with the other comment about going raw, most of the time that completely cures any allergy issues. Raw is very easy on the digestive system, so you really don't need to wait for his system to settle down. I would be very diligent to avoid any canned food with fillers like peas, peas are a huge allergy trigger

if you're looking for venison you could look at Ziwipeak, but it's pricey, however it's good food.

Yes I'm pretty sure.

I tried Dick Van Patten duck and chicken. I thought maybe it was the peas.

He has done really well on the Royal Canin adult pv which has peas.

But it is really expensive. Rocky is a big cat and need 1.5 cans to maintain 15 lbs.

I'm not going to change anything for at least a month.

I may try cooking myself.

Honestly, that's not enough evidence to suggest a poultry allergy, all that suggests is that something bothered him in that food. Natural Balance is not really high quality or good food, it's mediocre at best and contains a lot of fillers, which is more than likely the cause. Do what works for now, but consider that this is likely not a true poultry allergy and if you fed something like Rad Cat chicken, you might have a much better result.
