My cat Kira (a stray I took in) gave birth to 4 kittens and I've decided to keep 1 of them so she can have a companion. I'm not sure if a mother cat would do better with her son or daughter. The black ombre kitten I would like to keep is a boy. I'm worried about them having sex once he's older and spraying my things. Of course I will be getting them both fixed though. I could keep a girl of hers but I've heard that mothers and daughters fight once the daughter has grown up. Which sex will be better to keep for my mother cat Kira? I only want what's best for her and she is a very sweet but skittish cat.

I personally like the idea of a mother and son pair. Male cats are usually a lot less dominant than females when they have been neutered. As long as you get him neutered when he is young he should never spray or mate with his mother. She can be spayed as soon as the kittens are weaned. He can be neutered at 10 weeks or when he is two pounds, although some vets want you to wait a bit longer so it'll depend where you can get that done.

Since the cats are parent and child probably any one of them would be good. Does the mother cat have a favorite? Do you have a favorite? I would take these things into account over gender.

Can you let the  mom select?  The one she plays the most with or the kitten that bugs her the most
you can watch see how they bond together. Haven't had issues with mom daughter fights, or mom son.

Yeah, mother/son pairs usually do better than mother/daughter pairs. As long as everyone gets fixed in time! :lol3:. But it's not a huge deal, just keep whichever one you like best, unless she really doesn't get along with that one.

I would actually recommend keeping a pair of kittens plus mom. They will want to play more actively, and she will be tired!

Males should be neutered around 2 pounds. It's a super easy procedure, and when done at the appropriate age, he won't develop spraying or mating behaviors. Mom can be spayed when the kittens are 8 weeks old.

I like @talkingpeanut's idea, if you can swing it 2 kittens and mom would likely be one of your better options, seeing siblings group up together is very special.
