We have a screen door on the bedroom in our home. Because my boyfriend is highly allergic to the cats. So they are not allowed in the bedroom. But this allows them to see in the room and see what's actually going on. Our three cats free feed on dry food that is available all the time. They each get a third of a can of canned food in the morning once we are up. It's part of our normal routine. As we all know cats love & need routine.
However, a part of the routine that we are not enjoying or trying to encourage is our one cat sits outside the bedroom door and starting as early as 5 a.m. will start meowing for the mere reason of to get us up to give her her canned food. During the week we are up at 6 o'clock in the morning for work. They usually get fed breakfast about 6:30 in the morning. We both know not to move or make a sound if we want to try to sleep in on the weekends . All bets are off God forbid if one of us has to get up to go to the bathroom! We hate to shut the main bedroom door. But sometimes that is the only possible way to keep her quiet. Like I said, sometimes she starts doing it as early as 5 a.m.. Otherwise she's quiet and well-behaved during the night. It's only because she wants her canned food. Once she gets it she is completely quiet. She has dry food readily available anytime she wants it. And the other two cats are well-behaved and do not exhibit this Behavior. Any suggestions on how to get her to stop this? We would like her to be quiet and behave. And understand she gets her canned food whenever we get up to give it to her. Crying will not help the cause.

Hi @PetSitterIL and welcome to TCS!

I was just seeing you saying that last line of your post to your cat.. and it would have gone in one little pussycat ear and out the other.

We have so many threads on cats waking their humans up early in the morning for all sorts of reasons.

In this case it really might just be that you need to shut the door for a while.. it may be what she needs to break the pattern.

But someone else may have a better idea.

When she does wake you up do you get up and give her breakfast? If so this rewards the behavior. It would be best to get up and then make her wait for breakfast. This will teach her that waking you up doesn't help her cause.

We did this with our cats and it works. We also give them their dinner friday night and saturday night a little late so they aren't as hungry in the morning.
