Hi, I inherited a couple cats from my mom.  Overall, things have gone pretty well.  My one complaint is that they sit outside my bedroom door and meow all night.  If I let them in they jump on me in the middle of the night or chase each other around my bedroom.  Any tips on how I might get a good night's sleep?  Thanks.

Brent,

Sounds like they love you.

We go through the same thing to some degree but here is what I would suggest.

Try to get some cat trees and nice comfortable cat beds in a separate room. They might chase each other up and down the cat trees and then get tired and fall asleep in their beds. There are also heated beds etc that could be put in the room and they might be glued to those as they like warmth. Also, I would try to find some toys that might be able to be played with without human interaction (that aren't too noisy). Cats sleep a lot but sadly not as much as we would like when we want to sleep. The good news is there are things you can do and you will get used to it at some point.

Then, if you have time if you can play with them as much as possible before bed maybe they would get tired out and rest a little more during the night.

How old are they?

I hope this helps, hopefully others offer some suggestions. Thank you so much for taking good care of them. It sounds like they have a great home with a loving family.

Please feel free to ask any questions and hopefully we can help.

Welcome to TCS!

How old are they and have they been spayed/neutered?

Part of the problem is creating a new routine.  If they slept with your Mom; they are likely to want to sleep with you too.  I would suggest playing with them a couple times a day. Especially right before bed!  Really get them tired with things like wand toys, Da Bird or a laser pointer. Then feed them!  Cats natural routine says to hunt, eat, sleep.  So play then feed right before your bedtime and they should be ready to settle down for a while.

As far as keeping them out; this is something you will have to be consistent on.  For a cat who wants attention; even negative attention can fuel them to go on calling for you. So hard as it is; ignore, ignore ignore!  And I like CalicosRSpecial's suggestion of cat trees and comfy places to sleep outside of your room.  One of my cats likes to sleep on our couch blanket.  Typically I cuddle with her and doze off on the couch in the evenings.  So I leave the blanket messed up and thats where she sleeps.  I find her there in the mornings a lot of the time.  If it's really cold; i'll sometimes find her under it!  Our other cat has a blanket in a box that she loves. " She had a heated bed; but she had an accident so its out of commission at the moment.  DH is allergic to cats so our girls aren't allowed in our room to sleep either.  Mostly they accept it.  The only times they complain now are when we have been traveling and just come home or occasionally on weekend mornings if DH really sleeps in.
