Hello all, a friend's cat, Pippen, is very sick and I'm looking for ideas. He's at the vet now and the vet cannot figure out what is wrong. Tuesday my friend came home to find Pippen on the floor unable/unwilling to move with blood everywhere. Originally we thought one of the dogs had hurt him. she took him to the e-vet and there were no injuries at all but he was shocky with a low temp. the dog had scratches on her nose and at first we thought that is where the blood came from. Wed. afternoon, his breathing became labored and when she took him to her regular vet, he ran blood tests. Pippen's blood had a yellow color to it indicating liver damage. His blood tests indicate renal failure, liver imparement, very low white blood count and he has had a fever now for a couple of days. He has been tested for both Feline aids and FeLuke and both are negative. We now think the blood in the house came from Pippen having a nosebleed. We don't know what is wrong with him and any ideas would be appreciated.

Gosh how awful and so scary. I'm sorry your friend has to go through this. It's a good thing he is at the vets though.. they should be able to treat him even if they dont know the initial cause.

I would suspect some type of toxin or poison-

Hissy,

That was my first thought too. What did the cat eat? Does your friend have any plants in the house? Any household cleaners under the sink? Any gel air fresheners? Crawl thru the house on your hands and knees to get to about the cat's level. Look for anything chewed on. Look under tables/chairs etc.

Does the cat go outside??

{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}} to you and your friend in this time of crisis.

Pippen is only 8-9 years old. He is totally indoors only. I'll ask about toxins in the household, but with the reduction in white blood cells, I would expect it to be viral instead of toxin but I'll definitely make sure she looks around the house for anything.
Thanks

thanks to everyone's kind words and assistance. Unfortunatly, Pippen was too far gone and was released from his pain on Sunday. the vet suspects cancer but it is unconfirmed. Unfortunatly, the dog we originally thought may have hurt him also became very ill the same day Pippen did and she also passed away on Sunday, she had Leptospirosis.

I am truly sorry about the loss of both pets. Does the vet think lepto can be shared between species of pets? (cat and dog) Please accept my condolences for you and your freind, what a sad ordeal. hootiecat

thank you, yes, lepto can be passed from one to the other, but in this case it is unlikely. It is spread through contact with urin or direct bites. Pippen's xrays showed suspicious shadows that may have been tumors, therefore we believe it was advanced cancer. My mom and my friend are carefully watching all the other dogs and cats in the households to make sure nothing was spread.
thanks for everyone's support
