The only side effect my cats have ever had to the rabies vaccination is a bit of lethargy for a day afterawrds, especially if they also got the FVCRP vaccination at the same time. My cats only get the Merial PureVax 1 year rabies vaccine. That is the safest non-adjuvanted rabies vaccine available. It is also available in a new 3 year vaccine but it's typically recommended to start with the 1 year vaccine first and then the following year start the 3 year vaccine. If your cat is due for a rabies vaccination, call the vet ahead of time and ask if they use the PureVax vaccine. If they don't, ask if they can order it to use on your cat.

I've heard of some cats having pretty bad allergic reactions to the rabies vaccine. I found a few threads that discuss such allergic reactions here on TCS:

One of my cats, Lucy, exhibits a significant reaction to vaccinations.  We live in Louisiana, which requires annual rabies and FVRCP vaccinations.   After receiving her first vaccinations as a kitten, Lucy became increasingly lethargic over the course of the day - to the point where she fell limp.  I suspected the vaccinations andI immediately called the vet.  He assured me that her lethargy was not related to the shots, that she probably picked up a virus of some kind.  The next day she seemed fine.  During the course of the year, I changed vets (for unrelated reasons) and forgot about her reaction.

The following year, after her second round of shots, she exhibited an even more severe reaction. She became so weak that when I picked her up, her body fell totally limp, her breathing became shallow and her eyes looked glassy and unfocused.  I remembered the previous year's experience and called the after-hours, emergency vet.  They said I should watch her and if Lucy's condition worsened to bring her in.  I sat up with her all night.  By morning she improved.  And by late afternoon, she was running and playing.  Whew.

I called my vet.   She felt certain that Lucy reacted to the vaccinations and that it was likely the rabies shot.  However, the only way to determine the culprit with certainty would be to administer the shots one at a time.  We agreed that it was too dangerous to put Lucy through another round of shots.

Lucy hasn't received a vaccination in 4 years.  She's an indoor only cat so I don't worry about her contracting rabies.  The only downside is that I cannot board her since I do not have proof of vaccination.

One of my kitties had an allergic reaction to his 1 year rabies shot.  He started vomiting when I got him home.  I called the vet and they had me bring him back in.  By the time I got him there he had a fever and was red around the eyes and on his nose.  The vet gave him a steroid and fluids.  She kept him until his fever came down, I was able to go get him after 2 hours.

After that he got a shot of Benadryl twenty minutes before a vaccination and no more issues.  He no longer gets vaccinated because of another health issue.

The vet tech told me the rabies vaccine is the most prone to causing an allergic reaction and the vet told me it is actually an additive in the vaccine that causes the reaction.
