My 1 yr old cat has been sneezing frquently  today. And it looks like his nose is running. I mean sneezing 6 times an hour? Can a cat develop spring allergies? Does this require meds? Can I give him OTC  benadryl? I'd only use 1/4 tablet....until I can call the vet on Monday?

When do I call the vet?

Cats can develop allergies, just like we do.  Asthma as well.  Our 15 year old cat, in the past year or so, does have what the vet has said are minor asthmatic attacks.  It doesn't happen frequently enough to warrant medication thankfully, but the vet did mention that the same inhalers humans use are the same they recommend for felines.  They make small masks to fit over the cats muzzle.

I'm not sure about the dosing of OTC allergy medications but they are used as well.  The vet would best be able to advise on if this is the problem and if so, what medication to use and how much.  There might be members here who could also advise on that but it still would be best to bring your cat in for a look to be sure it isn't something else medically wrong causing the sneezing.

Keeping carpets/floors clean as possible is helpful. Dust mites are always a source of allergies as is the pollen we track into the home which can collect on many surfaces in the home.  I should take my own advice too, we don't do this quite as frequently as we should, and I'm suffering way more than the cat is!

This could also be a uri and may need antibiotics. A vet visit is in order! I'd call first thing on Monday.
