One of my cat's mouth isn't in great shape so I want to get him the softest food possible. Any suggestions? I don't have much experience with food processors. Thanks!

Okay, since no one has responded I will. A blender of some sort should get me the right consistency. Problem is getting meat in a blender. I'll have to shop around for a heavy duty blender otherwise looks like I might need two machines. Don't want that. Maybe cook the meat a bit in a soup then blend... Any ideas would be appreciated if any of you also make homemade food for cats with little to no teeth or sensitive mouths for whatever reason

may i ask -- what does your cat normally eat? i mean, canned cat food, home cooked, raw, etc?

if you normally serve canned cat food, then you can process to desired consistency using a regular food processor. you may need to add some water when you process -- try a little water, then add more as needed. i'd say use pulse, so you can check it -- so you don't end up with pureed. though, there's nothing wrong with pureed, if your cat likes that. i've pureed canned cat food quite a bit over the years. when one of my cats has some gastro upset, i'll puree some canned cat food -- it's easier on the tummy and easier to digest, smooth and not chunky.

if you're talking about meat in a soup/broth, then you may be able to use a regular food processor or even one of those immersion hand held stick type blenders.

raw meat may very well be totally different. if you're talking about boneless raw or partially cooked meat, you might need a heavy duty grinder or blender. if you're talking about raw or partially cooked meat with bone(s), i think you'd need a heavy duty meat grinder to be able to handle that.

i'm sure others will be along soon to reply.

Yeah, I'm thinking meat grinder then blender. Too many machines. I'll keep on the hunt for one machine

you could buy the meat pre-ground, if you wanted. then cook it to desired doneness, and process or blend. you'd need to add a complete nutritional supplement. i use alnutrin (for raw), others here at TCS have tried EZcomplete. here's a recent thread about EZcomplete -- http://www.thecatsite.com/t/318083/ezcomplete-supplement   a really nice thing about the EZcomplete is that it can be used with raw or cooked meat.

there's hare-today dot com (on the east coast of the US) and wholefood4pets dot com (on the west coast of the US). i order from hare-today. they sell boneless ground meats, as well as ground meat/bones/organs and other types (like cubes, etc).

I've also used a food processor: you can chop or thoroughly grind up the meat in it. I use poached meat and EZcomplete supplement to make food.

If you're planning on making a lot of food, to be your cat's primary diet, and don't already have recipes or supplements, you might want to take a look at the raw and homecooked food part of the forum.

i'm sorry i haven't gotten back sooner to reply. i had some kitty illness to handle here -- but they're doing much better now.

for the EZcomplete, or the meats from hare-today or wholefoods4pets?

here's a link to the food fur life website, where you'll find info about EZcomplete as well as the cost -- http://www.foodfurlife.com/   click on "store" towards the top of that webpage, and you'll go to the page with the two sizes of EZcomplete with their prices.

with hare-today and wholefood4pets, it's going to depend on what protein, what quantity, and boneless or ground meat/bone/organs and etc...what the price is. i would suggest reading the faq's at those websites thoroughly. it really helps to have read it all when you're putting together an order, and gives so much info in general. for example, hare-today has a 10 lb minimum order -- because the meat is frozen and needs to stay frozen until it gets to you; and, on the hare-today website you can check and see how long on average it takes for your order to get from them to you -- this is important if you have a 3 or 4 day transit, because you may need to add an extra ice pack or two (especially in hot weather/warmer climates.

I've been blending my boy Simon's food with a Proctor Silex Hand Blender, one speed.  It was an impulse purchase which turned out to be the most handy item in my kitchen, I think it cost about 20 US dollars.  Simon has oral/bone cancer and his jaw is deformed now, so all his food needs to be smooth, this works wonders.  A large can of food gets fluffed up to about a 1/4 cup more.  It makes the food smooth like pate, depending on the food you may need to add a few drops of water, and whats great, you can blend it in a mug or small container which makes clean up easy.  Good luck...

Sorry about your Simon. My Cody has been told by a few vets he's got no chance. In a few days we'll visit the last vet, an oncologist, then I'm on my own. Gonna start researching holistic/natural treatments.

How is Simon's condition/prognosis? Is he bleeding or anything? Cody is bleeding from his mouth, now it's also coming from his nose. Now the vets see that and they see a really bad tumor, but knowing how sensitive Cody is and his medical history, I see my very sensitive cat possibly reacting to a tumor that's not AS bad as it looks. Hence my getting him antibiotic shot today to clean him up before the oncologist. I DON'T believe he necessarily has to go just yet. I'm pretty sure they operate a bit more on some economics model... which is causing me to feel the pinch in my wallet but I think after I've exhausted the conventional options I should be able to find other possible alternative probably cheaper options. I hope Simon copes well and gets a few more years, or a miracle or two. I believe in them. Just gotta keep your eye out

My experience was similar to yours, but my vet was a straight shooter and didn't recommend any further treatment.

I have a thread where I'm sharing Simon's Diary.

Tumor / SCC: Defying the Odds with Hospice Care - Living with a Terminally Ill Loved One, I share with you: Simon's...

It's been a long road but still at this point I'm hopeful we still have more time, every weekend I pray I have at least one more week and so far its been 2 months and 1 week.

Simon just started showing signs of blood, but I think it's from his tooth hitting the skin under his tongue.  I'm using IAMS Max Calorie, Royal Canin Recovery rx and Purina Pro CN, and I make a blood tea and add that then blend it.  He's been eating just shy of a can a day.  I use a small syringe, a 3ml one so the food can flow slow and steady.

The 3ml syringe, high cal food and the hand blender have been my main tools along with a ton of paper towels, towels and old tee shirts.

I too believe in miracle's and the power of prayer, here's hoping Cody and Simon enjoy life for a while.

Feel free to send me a DM if you have any questions.  Please keep me informed on Cody's progress.  Be well, and best to you and Cody.
