Hello All! New here so hopefully you can point me in the right direction. My cats have always been given 1 wet meal a day and then grazed on dry. One of my cats started with a uti last month with crystals. That was all it took and the dry food was faded out for 2 wet meals a day. I continued on the same wet food which they all scarfed down. Now over the last few days, my Luna has stopped eating it! She acts like she wants it, takes a few bites and walks away. I have tried feeding her away from the other cats in case she wanted more privacy but to no avail. I figured she would eat when she got hungry enough but I am afraid her stubbornness may undo my determination for them to only eat wet food. How long do I let her go?!?... She is acting completely normal otherwise.

You need to take her to the vet ASAP. Stopping eating can be VERY dangerous for cats, as they can develop potentially life threatening complications in as little as 48hrs.

From everything you're saying, my guess is that Luna feels nauseous for some reason - acting hungry then walking away is a classic sign of nausea in cats. [article="32998"][/article][article="33011"][/article]

Hi, my kitty just went through a similar experience. He was on amoxicillin, which has side effects of loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and some cats even get constipation. The vet gave me mirtazapine to stimulate his appetite, but after researching it I decided not to give it to him as it can have very serious side effects. I decided to syringe feed him and gave him some miralax as he hadn't made a bm for a few days and his appetite soon came roaring back. I had kept some 1ml syringes that I had gotten years ago that had pain meds from another veterinarian. I mixed water with his wet food and carefully put it in his mouth. I had taken him to the vet 3 times, but he really just needed some help from me for a few days. Of course, if it lasts longer, you will probably have to take her back to the vet, but I hope she is doing better now.

Thanks all for the advice! Before taking her to the vet I followed a few of the pointers that were posted that I hadn't tried.  One of them being to give the cat anything she would eat just to keep her eating.  I put some dry food over top of her wet food and she scarfed it down!  Sure enough, she wasn't nauseous or sick, she just wasn't getting her way!  Luna is defiantly my most defiant child and will literally starve herself to get her way.  Thank God it didn't come down to syringe feeding.  She was getting meds that way once and she bit the top of the syringe off!  My vet calls her "Jaws" and now Luna gets all meds IM or SQ! LOL

She now has been eating her dry food for the last 2 days but still wont touch the wet.  Any suggestions!?!

Yay, glad she's better. I know Dr. Lisa Pierson has an article called "Transitioning Feline Dry Food Addicts to Canned Food." Hopefully you can find some good tips in it.

This is a great article about getting kibble addicts onto canned food. [article="31138"][/article]. One of the best toppers for kibble fans is FortiFlora. It's primarily animal digest, which is the same stuff that most kibbles are coated in to make them appetising. You don't need to use the pack recommended dose, as you're using it for it's flavour rather than as a probiotic ;)

Good luck. Getting kibble addicts onto wet food can take time, patience and ingenuity, but it CAN be done! :vibes:
