So my 14-year old female calico Pixel has had a very rough couple of months. She had emergency dental (3 teeth extractions + detartaring), and was diagnosed with chronic renal disease stage 2.

She recovered extremely well from her surgery ordeal (I was so worried!), and her appetite has returned. As a result of CKD, she needs to take a liquid beef-flavored supplement called PRONEFRA. It's a 1 ml dose twice a day via plastic syringe. At first, it was an easy process for her to get to take it. Now she's gotten fed up and weary of the stuff and darts her tongue and whips her head every which way hardly swallowing any of it. This stuff's expensive and so helpful for her kidneys to function!

Aside from all of this, she's since developed cat acne from the areas that leak and stick to her fur. I try wiping it clean in the morning but I am in a rush to get ready for work too. Every few days I use a soft bristle toothbrush, warm water and specially formulated acne shampoo to get rid of the blackheads.

Could her skin be reacting in an allergy to this PRONEFRA supplement?

Is this something your Vet prescribed?  (I can't find anything available in the U.S., thus the question). I can't even find anything that shows the complete ingredient list.  Anyway, if via prescription, can you call your Vet and ask them if she could be allergic?  OR, maybe it's the plastic syringe that's causing it...plastic dishes can cause it.

what happens if you just squirt this "palatable suspension" directly onto her food, or mix it into her food.  Will she eat her food?  That way you don't have to fight with her to get it in her.  I'm assuming from what little I can find that it's ok to give it that way as long as they will actually lick it up.

Does this really work?  I've had 3 kidney cats and have been told that there is really no kidney supplement that brings back the kidneys once they're "broken".  Of course, I guess it depends on how bad they are when it's detected
.  Usually it isn't found until it's pretty far along

Pronefra http://www.vetuk.co.uk/dog-suppleme...ts-c-5_897/pronefra-for-cats-and-dogs-p-20536 was prescribed by my vet. It's sold in Canada but it's a brand manufactured in France.

Pixel is pretty sharp and knows if I've hidden anything in her wet food. I was hoping the supplement was odorless or flavorless since most kitties can detect.

She eats out of stainless steel dishes. I've stopped giving her the supplement for a day and the acne hasn't gotten any worse.

I'd like to switch to a tablet form of kidney supplement such as Vetri-Sciencehttp://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/Vetri-Science-Renal-Essentials-Cat-Supplement/125043.aspx

What k/d supplement that is easy enough to administer is everyone else giving their kitty?

I read through your previous posts and didn't see any previous mention of kidney disease (insufficiency)....so, I thought I'd start by addressing that aspect for you. Most of us who have been active in online cat communities for years know that, while general forums like this are great places to become more involved and knowledgeable in all-things-cat, when it comes to more complicated feline health conditions/diseases, there are specialized online communities - and, that's where the best possible medical info/support is available.

For kidney disease/insufficiency there are a couple of online groups that have been active for many many years. The person who "owns" one of these has also authored a fabulous website (which many people consider the 'oracle' of feline kidney disease)......here's a link to what she has to say about Pronefra: http://www.felinecrf.org/phosphorus_binders.htm#pronefra

Now, she last updated that piece about a year ago.....I'd be very inclined to join her online group and get the latest feedback from the folks there......here's their group home/signup page: https://tanyackd.groups.io/g/support    Here's info on how the group 'works': http://www.felinecrf.org/tanyas_support_group.htm

Now, about the focus of your post, the "acne".......your very first post here (3 years ago) was about Dexter's acne......presumably you got that cleared up, but, could there be anything in common with this new outbreak on Pixel?   (http://www.thecatsite.com/t/270231/bump-on-my-cats-chin-and-gum-area)

My vet gave me Semintra for Ellie, and that is easy to administer. It is a flavourless liquid in a dropper bottle that I just sprinkle on her food. Ellie is a very picky eater, but she has never noticed it.

A week has passed since I've temporarily stopped administering the Pronefra ckd supplement to Pixel and her acne and vomiting have stopped. I do believe there is a direct correlation between this liquid supplement and it making Pixel a little uncomfortable. I'm going to call the vet and see about an alternative.

Thank you White Shadow for all of your insight! I am familiar with Tanya's website about CKD. Pixel is a Stage 2 kidney disease sufferer.

Dexter's "second head" as I call it ended up just being hardened skin (non-cancerous) that will be lanced off and stitched up. I plan on taking him in for his dental cleaning and small surgery of removing the skin bump.
