I'm excited to go onto the adoption center today. I know there aren't many volunteers coming in because of the holiday. The cats will be begging for attention.

So I get to the shelter today at 11, and apparently there was a bit confusion, as they don't usually have volunteers on the holidays (as they don't need to spruce up quite as much as they do when people are gonna be there), so everything was already cleaned. The person I'd asked was a member of the board and assumed people came in on holidays, but note to self, they don't. However, she had me socialize with the kitties while she was there. She was waiting for her friend with a dog to come by so they could see how the one cat would react with dogs (as there was a potential adopter with two dogs. That all went well!

ANYWAY, I got to go into a room they normally don't allow the volunteers to go because there's a new mama and her under-one-week-old babies in there. There's a smaller room in there with some older kittens that were just starving for attention she said - and she wasn't kidding! I spent a good chunk of time with those four. A black one, a tabby, and two torties. Their back teeth are coming in so my hands and arms look a bit like pin cushions (yes, I made sure to wipe down with alcohol afterwards!). I also have a few scratches from the little guys climbing and occasionally, falling and grabbing onto my arm for dear life
They were just so cute, had a couple of them just sitting on my foot at times (I had my legs crossed and they'd venture out onto "the ledge" that was my foot!). Sweet little babies. The tabby reminded me so much of Oscar in terms of the intense stares he'd give me, and how he'd beat up the others. Oscar used to beat up on Oliver back when they were babies too.

I was probably in there for about 45-50 minutes I'd guess. I came out and looked at the new mama. Didn't touch because I didn't want to pass anything to the babies, but I did look. She was nursing and actually got up to come say hi to me. What a sweetheart. Then she went back and the little fluff balls made their way back to the milk bar. They occasionally bit too hard because she'd suddenly meow and swat at them as if to say, "Hey, be gentle!"

And finally, I had to go say hello to my seniors. Couldn't leave without visiting them. They SO badly want to be loved, it breaks me heart. The one in the middle at the top of the cat tree, whom I refer to as the Queen Bee, REALLY wanted attention. I would try to show others attention, and she'd grab my hand with her paw to pet her again. Then I had two on the floor that were just rubbing all over my legs. I'd bend down to scrub their bellies and the Queen Bee would get quite upset! There was the little orange guy on the same ledge as the other day (he's the one that sniffled in my face last time), he's just such a little love bug. It was so hard to say goodbye to them!

Now I'm home, eating homemade waffles. I think I took too many!
I always feel the worst for the older cats . Lots of them had homes and know what they are missing. I tried to fill out an application to volunteer but kept breaking down. I think it's too soon for me to consider working with cats that need more than I can give them.

she has 3 dif threads asking for help-i answered on the second one. talking peanut also jumped in. thank you Kitten's mom for trying to get her help..

Just vacuumed the hallway and cat room. its hot out and moved the air purifier so the ac has its own plug. now have to wait for Jon to muscle it into the window-it will be running by noontime. Right now its not too bad. I blocked the windows from the hot sun. all cats are outside lounging in the shade on the deck. It is supposed to be 89 at 1ish so for now its managable. got to vacuum some more. I am cringing at how messy it is in here. I really need to do a better job. I blame it on the cats-thats my story and I am sticking to it!
It was breaking my heart that I had so little advice to give her. I hope she keeps us updated as I get emotionally invested in these threads. Why do our pets never get sick on Monday morning the week after we win the lottery ?

I blame the mess in my house on my husband.

Since I can't get out to see the fireworks, I'll probably end up watching those down at the National Mall on TV.  I used to go down there every 4th to watch them.  Once there was an anti-war protest at the same time and we all got tear gassed.  That was fun!  It was also when I learned that pressing ice cream bars (still in the package) against your eyes helped with the burning.  Thank heavens for street vendors!

Kittens are adorable at that age aren't? (Makes you not even mind dosing the countless puncture marks from teeth and claws and occasionally losing sweaters to them.) I'm glad you got to spend some time with them, and I'm glad you didn't neglect your normal kitties. (It's easy to do when your mind's filled with the soft cuteness of kittens.)

And too many waffles? Perish the thought!!

If you check tomorrow, the local displays will probably be on Youtube. I hope you have fun!

Well, I had an interesting day at work today. (And yes, according to my coworker, we'll be getting time and a half today, since it was a holiday.) I met two other people who work at my store that I've never met before, and the papers that vanished? They turned up! According to one of the coworkers that came in during her lunchtime for her second job
(I don't see how she can have two with this job! And  she has kids! It makes me feel inadequate somehow...) a customer brought them in yesterday. I'm just glad I have them back (and I'm going to the library tomorrow to copy them just in case). One customer told me he hadn't heard about our special summer cup so I gave him the sales pitch--and he leaned across the counter, looked at my coworker, and asked, "Ya'll hire a robot? I didn't know they came so lifelike!"
(It's okay though,  the next customer said that I'm the best customer service rep that he's ever met, which was nice.)

I had one customer that was in such a hurry to leave, he left without the pin to his forty-five dollar Verizon card! (I set it in the middle behind the counter, told my coworker about it, and left it there for him). I had another customer come in, put two dollars on the pump he was at, and then leave. (Another customer ended up pumping his gas--but don't worry; they worked something out between them.) Another customer was a woman that had the creepiest  necklace I've ever seen; it looked like a jaguar head. (The necklace was either gold or imitation gold, but the head looked lifelike--and creepy.)

It sucks that I have so much trouble telling faces apart. It's a good thing that no one has (I think) thought to give me someone else's ID when buying age restricted products, because if the hair and eyes match I assume it's the same person. (Not much else I can do. AWM's under the impression that now that I'm working with the public I'll get better at recognizing faces--but I have my doubts. It's something I've always had trouble with; I can't see it getting better now if years of school thrown with other students my age didn't.)

And now, just because I can, a joke I got online. Why aren't there any knock knock jokes about America?

Because Freedom Rings.

@Tallyollyopia   I have problems with faces as well and recently learned about prosopagnosia.  It's a condition that some people have that makes it difficult for them to distinguish faces.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prosopagnosia   i took an on-line test (ok, ok, I know they don't mean anything) and learned I have a mild case of it.  It's very hard for me to distinguish different characters in movies or TV shows at first and this, in turn, makes it hard for me to follow the plot sometimes.  So you are not alone!

Back to work tomorrow
Not looking forward to this week because my co-worker is on vacation all week so I'm on my own doing everything... in two facilities
This is exactly why we need at least another full time person. If one person is on vacation or something, there's still two people to handle all the work. I am going to get some help from one person but he also has lab stuff to do so I'm not sure how much he will actually be able to do. I'm only going to do the main important stuff. Everything else will have to either wait or be done by the lab people themselves.

Do you not find it a bit sad when they are starving for attention. I know I do. Volunteering is hard work.; but so rewarding.

Yesterday, I had the cleaning/feeding shift at the adoption area. We had 5 cats, all in the range of 1-5 or 7 years old.

They are all a sweet group.

I was bending over, taking the dirty food dish out of one of the lower cubbies, out of nowhere, I got a 'thump' on the head!! From Moonie!! Such a character. The last time I saw him, he had me in stitches also. That was when he was in the isolation area (state law before being allowed into the adoption area). That was when I let him out of his cubby and he was playing in a box, hole in the side of it.. He cracked me up!!

Pepper Jack was reaching out for me.. They were all talking at the same time!!

We have 2 hour shifts at the humane society. When I have the cleaning/feeding shift, I alway like to spend at least the first hour, playing with the kitties. Either one at a time or a couple at a time. Yesterday, I was living dangerously. I let out 3 cats at once!!  What was I thinking!! Moonie, Scotty, and Pepper Jack (black cat), all at once!!

Moonie is a 'play hog'! I took out one of those feather string stick toys. They all went crazy for it! Moonie felt it was all his. He even started hissing and batting at the other two when they wanted to play. That was it for him. I put him back in his cubby and told him he has to learn how to play nicely. He actually sassed me back!! I get no respect from him either--just like my guy, Artie!!

Scotty and Pepper Jack were fine together! They actually kissed each other! I was really shocked to see that! It was so sweet.

I really love Scotty. He has been there for so long. He has a very sensitive tummy. Not quite IBD, but we are trying special foods for him. He has had diarrhea despite being wormed twice. People are shying away from him because of this. He is such a sweet boy. Mostly white with a few patches of brown. A bit boy, 5 yrs old, who was dumped by his owner. Who could do that????

The day ended well though. Andre the Giant, Yes his name--left for his 'forever;, home, I hope. That poor boy was returned twice. Once because the adopter's own cat did not get along with him, and again because that adopter became pregnant, so she gave up her 2 cats...seriously...Anyway, getting back to his name. I never saw such a fat cat.. it is a sin. He weighs at least 18 lbs... I had a hard time picking him up...he is so fat, he is not very interested in playing. He loves sitting next to you, on the bench, getting petted...Now keep your fingers crossed for this adoption for him...He did have a lot of interest. A lot of people filled out application forms specifically for him...

Sorry about the duplicates on this one post of mine. My Safari browser decided to take a holiday ......ugh

Your "Queen Bee" reminds me of Roger's paternal grandmother, who spent the last year or so of her life in a nursing home.  Roger went to visit her one day, and on his way in he met one of his cousins coming out.  Then he got inside and his grandmother said "Oh, you're the only one who ever visits me!" (with a perfectly straight face).  One day his grandmother wasn't in the lobby to meet him when he arrived, so Roger passed a few minutes talking with one of the other residents who was still waiting for her visitor.  Then Roger's grandmother came out, saw Roger talking with another resident, and attacked the other woman with her cane!  In an institutionalized older cat it's understandable, but it really is extreme when it's an old woman doing it, especially the physical attack.

We've had illegal firecrackers going off in the neighborhood since Friday.  They don't faze Jasmine in the least, but last night I noticed that when the volume is turned up on the television they sound a heck of a lot like a cat barfing in the other room.  I went looking for Jasmine so I could clean up and there she was in her favorite shedding chair, looking at me in surprise -- "What's wrong?  It's just firecrackers.  They're outside.  They won't hurt you, Mom."

People have to drive all the way to Wyoming to get these things, and they still do it every year.  I've never seen the appeal of loud bangs.  Pretty colors are another matter.  Roger has to go to bed early tonight, but I'll probably drive around looking for a good view of one of the legal displays.  Other than that, I'm doing as little as possible today.  I'll take care of email, hang around here, check out BookBub and so forth, oh, yes, and water the roses, but then I'll probably spend the day reading.

Does anyone know how long this thread is going to continue?

It is so sad to have to leave them, especially when they've not had attention for awhile. Since it was a holiday weekend they've not had much unfortunately. They have two hours, twice a week, specially designated for socializing. Then a couple hours a day for cleaning (that you have to sign up for since they depend on the people showing up then - I don't think there's a limit on that, they just want to know how many folks).

One thing I don't have to worry about is which ones like company or not. It's a cageless cat shelter, the only exception being for cats that might be sick or recovering from surgery, or the mama that was dropped off in their doorway a week ago in active labor. If there are any cats that can't be with other cats, for reasons other than that, they get their own room. There are only three kitties there that have their own rooms though - one has cerebellar hypoplasia, she's not sick per se, but can't be in a regular room; there another that just doesn't like other cats; and then there's another that was by herself, but I'm not really sure why.

Leaving the kittens made me sad, especially when Cray Cray (that's what I call him anyway) just stared intently at me. Then again when I had to leave the seniors' room. Those little guys have just left a big impression on me - so full of personality!

As far as fat cats... Maple was about 17.5 lbs when we finally got her on a scale! She's lost a bit of weight (about two pounds) since being on Prozac, but she's 14, I'd rather have her be fat and happy at this point. I tried putting her on a diet for awhile and she was miserable. THAT really broke my heart.

deleted post...no double post... trying to remove this.. help!! moderators!!! please..stupid computer...is that 15 words...
I have responded after a post only to have two of mine show up in a row. I think you just have to roll with it.
It happens to me when I click on "SUBMIT" but my original message remains in the editing box.  Then I accidentally re-submit, thinking that the first one didn't take.  Try flagging it -- that will generally get a moderator's attention, as well as making it obvious that you weren't breaking the rules deliberately.

Her short term memory is gone. If you ask her something from about a long time ago she will probably remember it crystal clear I have a friend who can't remember what I told her 10 minutes ago or a week ago but what happened a few months ago is like it was yesterday. Beginning Alzheimers,  One day his grandmother wasn't in the lobby to meet him when he arrived, so Roger passed a few minutes talking with one of the other residents who was still waiting for her visitor.  Then Roger's grandmother came out, saw Roger talking with another resident, and attacked the other woman with her cane!  In an institutionalized older cat it's understandable, but it really is extreme when it's an old woman doing it, especially the physical attack.  That's why she was in an institution, she was a danger to herself and a others!

Until all threads together have reached 4 Million!

So far no booms or crashes but it's only 6 pm, I'm sure it will start after dark, around 8 pm, I think I'll drive up to the highest point in the community where I can look into several of the other cities who set off fireworks. I cold drive to the beach where they have displays but the Canyon Road will be packed and then I won't find a place to park, so forget that too.

It may have been beginning Alzheimer's, but she was always manipulative, for as long as I knew her.  And she was there because she couldn't care for herself any longer, not because she was a danger to others, though she was beginning to get that way.  She managed to die before they actually had to keep her sedated to protect the other patients.

And this particular post is number 4,050,569.  We passed 4 million a long time ago.  If you look at the address in your browser when you're either posting or have a post selected you can see the number of the post.

Interesting, whenever it submits, but doesn't clear my draft, and then I try hitting submit again, it tells me I already submitted it. So either the problem got worse, or maybe it's something with particular browsers? For a couple days I didn't see it holding onto the text but noticed it again yesterday. I know it's been reported in the help section already so there is that :)

I think the "game" for this thread ends after 5000 posts. So, it will continue till then I'm assuming.

Margret, that was a pretty funny story about the grandmother :lol3: The mental image made me lol! Not the fact that she was like that, just the mental image of someone actually DOING That!

I've been having this problem today a lot. Not sure why.

Fireworks are going off like crazy around here. It isn't even dark yet. I think people are impatient since they have to work tomorrow.

---BIG EDIT---
Well, I had an interesting day at work today.

I just checked out one of the links from the Wikipedia article, and I think you may find this website useful: http://www.choisser.com/faceblind/   It's written by a guy who has this problem and he talks about adaptive techniques.  But it's basically book length; I haven't read the whole thing.

Well, I don't know how much longer this thread will last since we have passed 4  million and the name of the thread is "Let's babble our way to post 4 000 000 (4 Million!) etc"  . So have those who monitor this thread been sleeping on the job and missed that we have passed this deadline? Or are we now going for 5 million and they forgot to tell us? Hmm. I guess they're fired and are slinking into their holes with bowed heads  in shame.

You need to read the first post.  This contest is up to either 4,000 or 5,000 posts.  The contest for the 4 millionth post was site wide.

Fireworks is beginning here.  So far kitties are ok.

So after a short rainstorm dark has brought out the low IQ subset in my community.  The sheriff dept. has been racing up and down the main road with sirens off and no lights I'm assuming in response to call ins about illegal fireworks.

You know it takes a special kind of stupid to be setting of flying flame throwers out here. But it takes greed for our state and county government to continue to allow the sale of fireworks that are illegal to use. Yep they do that.

I feel bad Mercy is hiding. she gets no sympathy we just go on with life in the house. Mook is out and about. Life happens and getting your pets acclimated to it is a good thing.

I have wondered for a long time when celebrations became excuses to consume excess alcohol or do things that would not normally be socially acceptable.
