The weather people here in Chicago are giving out the same kind of advice, and they have their storm tracker vehicle out west waiting on the storm. I don't know. They do  exaggerate things. ETA is 8 p.m., but they are telling us to take cover now as I type. Sun is shining.
Hmmm I'm not sure if I should be worried that they are preparing for very bad storms tonight, or just think they are exaggerating as usual. Sounds like we'll find out about 7-8pm tonight or so. OEMC is urging people to "stay in" tonight unless they absolutely have to go out. And both airports are already canceling flights. Apparently there are super-cells to the west of us. Time will tell I guess.

I have my beer at the ready.
I hope you and your kitties stay safe and sound if those storms actually hit.  And I hope your electricity stays on!

Tally: i mostly read scottish, medieval or wester american historical romance. i used to read mostly indian historical like ggeorgina gentry-this is the best factual historical romance i have found-she researches and add a chapter at the end of the book and says what was fact and what she made up. i learned more from these than our boring history classes. i couldnt imagine living life like this but i was curious. i guess i always was into self sufficiant type of topics=anything that has to do with doing things on my own with littel help.

yes please keep cover if you are in the area. the humidity is now completely GONE! I may have to shut the window!!

I just googled it-tornado watch?!!!

Today went pretty good at the orchard. We hoed the whole pumpkin patch. It took 4 hours and I only got 1 blister. My shoulders and neck are pretty sore though. Tomorrow I'll be mowing all day. So I'll get paid for sitting on my butt! Woohoo!

It's exciting seeing all the prep work that goes into an orchard in the summer. The business part of it doesn't open until mid September, but their is so much to be done before that time. I can't wait to see how the cider is made and help with that whole part of it. Oh, and one of the best things about their cider, is that it isn't pasturized! All those wonderful enzymes will still be alive! On the downside though, it isn't organic.

I hope everyone who's expecting bad weather, doesn't get it too bad.

I love Scottish historical romances!
I don't think we're in the same area. I just went out to check mail and got hit with an almost palpable wall of humidity.
At least (as things stand) I'll be off tomorrow. I don't see it actually happening, at least not until the new girl actually starts

In a better vein, do you read Lynsay Sands? She's one of my favorite Scottish romance authors. (She does something with vampires as well, but I don't read those.)

I'm glad things went well for you.  I hope you don't wake up in the morning with rebelling muscles from today's workout!  It's wonderful you''re enjoying this job so much.  And it will all pay off when you pick your first ripe apple and eat it straight from the tree.  The difference between an apple straight from the tree and one from the store is like comparing the sun to a flashlight when it comes to flavor.  Yum.  Now I want one.

It's actually gotten quite dark in the last 10 minutes out by me (I'm in Northfield, northern Cook County). It was pretty bright before that. Yeah, they do exaggerate things, I agree with you there. I guess it's better to be prepared than not, but then there are people like my sister is absolutely freaking out. I'm not quite at the "freaking out" point. I figure as long as the TV signal is still there it's not TOO bad yet.

At least you don't live in a place where the power goes out if the wind blows the wrong way. (My second job was like that--and it would cause all kinds of havoc in the kitchen when the power went out!). So, here's hoping you don't get weather that's too bad!

Actually, when it comes to weather-related outages, we've been EXTREMELY lucky. We have had lights flicker and maybe go out for a few seconds (just enough to force us to reset all the clocks). My friend just three miles away on the other hand, his situation sounds like yours - the wind blows the wrong way and their power goes out. We've also been really lucky with our house - I've often seen the skirting completely blown off of some people's homes, along with roof tiles, etc. *knocking on wood*

Yes, I'm sure Honeybee does love her momma.  And, like all cats, she has no concept of how heavy she is sitting on your chest, or how distressing excess heat is to her momma, or how much heat she herself generates.  Sympathy.

Ah, books.  I love books, just love them.  I didn't have as many books as you do but once I had a very large collection of science fiction.  When I moved most recently, for various reasons it got left behind. Now I'm slowly replacing them on my Kindle.   I keep telling myself that the upside is that I'll never have to pack and lug boxes of books around again.  The problem is:  I like the feel of a book in my hand.  I like having something that won't just disappear in a flash of electrons.  And I really like sitting in a room with books surrounding me.   Ooops.  I'd better shut up now.  The idea is to encourage you to get rid of books, not bring home more from the thrift shop!  But I'm with you - yard sales, library sales, book sales, used book shops, thrift stores... I was a total sucker for books.   I actually did read most of mine but I didn't have as many as you do.  Anyway, good luck with the decluttering!

I once told a friend that Powell's (a huge bookstore in Portland, Oregon) was an incredibly dangerous place.  He thought I was afraid I'd be mugged if I went there.  No, I was just afraid of how much money I'd spend.

I've been going through the books that I've managed to salvage from the depredations of the house guests from hell and a basement flood, and I've discovered a few interesting things.  I found three copies of Ingathering: The Complete People Stories of Zenna Henderson; two or three (or four -- not sure yet) copies of the first two volumes of a science fiction trilogy by David Brin and none of volume 3; and, joy of joys, apparently all of my Ogden Nash (including a few duplicates), but still no copy of the separate index.  One copy of Ingathering has already gone to the Little Free Library a couple of blocks from my house; the other and the excess Brin books are going to a used book store that will give me credit against future purchases, and the extra Ogden Nash I think I'll try at a little antique and vintage book store that I noticed the other day; maybe I can get them to keep an eye open for a couple of other Ogden Nash books that I'd like to have.  And as for volume three of that trilogy, I splurged and bought a Nook copy of it.

What with all the book losses I've suffered recently I currently prefer electronic.  They're harder to lose, especially if you back them up to an external hard drive.  Also, it's easier to read them in bed.

Ah, books. I love reading the stories that others have crafted. Some of my favorite series include The Dresden Files,  by Jim Butcher and The Valdemar Series, by Mercedes Lackey. (Of course, I'm also a fan of her 500 kingdom  novels as well as her Elemental Masters  series.) The only thing I like better than reading fantastical worlds created by other people is seeing people enjoy reading worlds I've created.

In other news I got into an argument with AWM earlier. We were arguing about what's more important: inches, or weight. According to the scale I weigh almost as much as I did when I started (minus four tenths of a pound), but according to my waistline I'm almost one whole size smaller. Of course  I weigh almost the same; I'm replacing fat with muscle and everyone knows that muscle weighs more than fat. (There's less air in it, for one thing.)

So I just  got a call saying I'm working third shift tonight--in exchange for actually being off  tomorrow. (I understand; life happens, and she wants me for third anyway as soon as the new girl--who was in training class yesterday--gets into swing. Now though, I'm hyped--because I had  adjusted my sleeping schedule for first and second shift--since that's what I on all week. (I don't mean to whine.) So, somehow I've got to cool down (and calm down) enough to sleep a bit before work tonight.
Also, unlike fat, muscle burns calories just by existing.

I don't know if this is true or not but I once read that it is possible to avoid getting lost in a maze if you reach out to the wall of the maze with one hand and stay in contact with it the whole way.  Never lift it up because a passage branches off - just go down the passage.  It seems to me that even if this did work to get you out again, it would very definitely be the long way around!

The things we put up with for our kitties! You are not the only one who remains immobile despite bladder needs or limbs going to sleep, just to avoid rousing a sleeping cat.  I think it's sweet Honeybee snores.  I've never had a cat snore before.  Dogs yes, but never a cat.  It must sound pretty cute.

Another one of us whose sleep is controlled by a feline overlord!   Two - three hours a day running?  Wow.  Were you in training for something when you were running that much?
The maze technique is true.  It won't necessarily lead you to the center of the maze (assuming that's your goal), but it will eventually get you out.  A better technique for exploring a maze is that of Theseus, with his ball of string (or "clue").  And as long as we're not talking about a hedge maze, a piece of chalk is even more effective; it will keep you from going in circles if used properly.

If you want a really funny maze story, get a copy of Three Men in a Boat, by Jerome K. Jerome, from Project Gutenberg and look for the Hampton Court maze in it.  Of course, the whole book is well worth reading.  Utterly hilarious.

Really? I didn't know that. I just know that I'm doing more physical labor than I have for a long time...and I'm building muscles. (I know the difference between pain of building and toning muscles and the pain of injuring said muscles--good thing too, or I'd be worried given how much pain I'm in at the end of shift.)

Sounds like a tornado was spotted or touched down (not sure) west of here, out in the DeKalb area. They've interrupted my show to talk about it and it's been on for about a half hour or more. Missed most of the season premiere of Big Brother! Oh well. We started getting thunder and lightning here in the past five minutes, and I think it's raining, not sure. Trees are moving quite a bit, but it doesn't sounds like any gusts are hitting the house just yet.

Oh, I know Powells in Portland and it is indeed a very dangerous place.  I spent a couple of delightful hours there one afternoon, wishing I had a big pile of money in my bank account.  What a heavenly place for book-lovers.

That's great you found your Ogden Nash.  You must be feeling so much better knowing your collection is complete but for the index.

Thanks for confirming the "surviving-the-maze" technique.  I always wondered if it really worked.

Three Men in a Boat - wonderful, terrifically funny book!

DreamerRose I live near you. Hubby and I have been watching the channel 2 news. Right now it looks like we are in between two systems.  My hubby was supposed to go to a friend's house in Winfield tonight but decided to stay home.  We have a new used car and he wanted it in a garage.  My hubby is off tomorrow so he will stay up tonight and keep track of the weather if he needs to so I can attempt to get some sleep for work tomorrow.

Tornado chaser's are on Rt. 59 in Plainfield right now. I guess it is bad in that area.

I have a LOT of friends out in the southwest suburbs, like Oswego and Amboy. Hoping they are all staying ok. So far mainly just rain in the northern suburbs.

I have satellite tv too but mine is still working.  Most of the local networks will also be running weather broadcasts on their websites. I use those for information if needed when our satellite goes out.

Yeah, I was watching it online for a bit. Satelline came back about... three minutes ago? Looks like it might end up missing us, at least the worst of it. I've been following Channel 5 for now.

 CONGRATULATIONS.
Sounds like you had a great day.   Hopefully work will not be too painful you will feel like your honeymoon arrives quickly.   Have a lovely time enjoying the peace and quiet in between the partying.

@foxxycat   are you sure Honeybee is only helping you read, and not quietly speed-reading that book while enjoying the peace and quiet?
She looks so cute there burrowed in with the book over her face.

Well so far work has been a challenge. At my work the internet was down. Phones were down. A bunch of people called in or left early because they were sick. To make matters worse the department I manage keeps getting further and further behind because the owner of the company insists that 3 writers can do the work of at least 4. hmmm. we'll see what happens when I leave for my actual honeymoon in September and how far we fall behind.

On books. I am reading something called the blue spool of thread (or something like that). I think it has to be the most boring book I've read yet, but I want to give it a chance since its award winning and such.

Yes, muscle burns calories even in your sleep.

I hate to recommend it in hot weather, but a hot shower (as hot as possible without scalding yourself) can help to get rid of the exhaustion toxins that cause muscle soreness when you're building muscles.  Of course, there's nothing to prevent you from following it up with a cold shower....

I had to give up watching TV because the interruptions of tornado warnings were continuous. Son texted from Colorado that one of the storm chasers on the Weather Channel was on 75th street - about two blocks from my house. Most of the activity is south of here. @catlover73  I saw that about Plainfield, and since Donutte has rain, you are right about us being between two systems. It's calm here in Naperville, light rain, no wind, no thunder. Will keep paws crossed.
