Oh, my! Snow! I'm in Florida and it's in the 80's today and sunny - tee shirts and flip-flop weather.

Your cat looks absolutely spell-bound!

I certainly believe that!   I hope you have some sort of cover over it to inhibit fishing?

Thank you! I just learned even more about the molting in your last comment. So interesting!

Is she the size of your palm, or bigger?

Nice picture! [emoji]128522[/emoji]
She's probably about 6 inches from furthest front toe left to back toe right. Her species gets to be around 7.5 or 8 inches from toe to toe.

Another fun fact: poison dart frogs have the exact same poison (same chemical composition) as the Papa New Guinea ptooey bird. (I'm not sure I spelled that right.) But it's the only known poisonous bird in the world, and I just think it's amazing that it's got the same poison as frogs found on the other side of the globe.

Do those really count as tarantulas though? What makes a tarantula a tarantula as opposed to just a big spider?

On to other news--I was in the backyard a few minutes ago and there is a strange cat in the yard. I wouldn't mention it (stray cats, Ghost) except that this cat has a massively deformed right eye. Not only is the right eye larger than the left eye, but it's an odd shape. Instead of being round or almond shaped it's shaped kind of like the letter "u". What causes that? Is it safe to have this cat in the yard with mine?
Tarantulas are different from other spiders (some argue that they are technically more closely related to Vingeroons (googling these creatures is not for the faint of heart) than other spiders) because they are hairy, have eight eyes rather than the six than some spiders have, have two retractable claws on each foot, and have fangs that move up and down rather than horizontally as they do on most spiders. There are additional qualifications, but it gets more dicey beyond that. Generally the ones that have the itchy hairs that they flick are known as New World species (since they're the spiders that evolved in the Americas). The ones that just have very strong venom are called Old World species (and come from Africa and Asia).

Today has been a little crazy! First off, getting up at 7-something to feed my kitties their breakfast and sing happy birthday to my 1-year-old boys while doing so! Then having the smoke detector decide that instead of beeping every couple hours, it would beep every 10 minutes :cringe: To back up a bit, it started doing that earlier in the week. I took the one off and we replaced the battery, because it seriously was upsetting Sugar. Poor thing was panting and shaking like crazy every time it beeped! Then after that, the one in the living room started up. Much louder than the other. And then today, when it was beeping every ten minutes, Sugar went into pure panic mode :frusty: So, I went to the city to pick up my brother, bring him over to replace the battery and put back both detectors (because I was freaking out too much on the ladder). And then he helped with some other stuff before I took him home.

I'd wanted to go for some Lithuanian food today, but got talked out of it by mom. The restaurant is just past Midway Airport, which is way the heck away from where I live. Plus it involved being on I-55 for a bit, and after hearing about two shootings on I-55 in the last week, I wasn't too keen on driving on it. So, I went to Red Lobster instead. So, that is our birthday celebratory dinner for the boys  They will be having the same thing they have every Sunday evening - Fancy Feast!

And now, I'm having dinner and relaxing. The kits are all sleeping for the time being. Sugar's begging for my food, while Honey rests in one of the currently (but not long) unoccupied chairs.

Yes maam, I sure do. I also put it on the bottom of the book case. There is only 2 inches between the top of the tank and the shelf above it. I will, however, have to move the tank a little in order to get in it. It's not hard though. It slides fairly easy. Not easy enough for the cats to move it though.

She certainly seems enthralled with it! :lol3:  What's her favorite fish? Is there more than one?
There's 4 in it and I have 3 more to put in the tank after their quarantine . I have a small tank that has three fish in it. But one of the fish had ick on it, so they all have to be treated. Once it's cleared up, I'll put them in the tank too. I don't think she has a favorite yet. I think she likes all fish!

Sarthur2 Sarthur2 I'm ready to move in with you. I miss my tank tops flips flops. I'm sick of coats and boots.

There was a little bit of overlap where we had both the turtles and the cat, and by the time we released the turtles (into a pond owned by someone who had been looking to add turtles to it--and I did check to make sure that red-eared sliders are native to where we live before  releasing them) and the turtles were eating live fish by that time, so Rose got a good view (the turtles were in a clear plastic tub) at the turtles and the fish. She had no reaction to the turtles, but she did like to watch the fish. (I tried to keep a couple after releasing the turtles, just so that she could watch them, but it turns out that while I can keep turtles and fish  alive I can't keep just fish alive. Not sure why, don't really care. (She didn't try to eat them--she just watched.)

On a happier note, Munchkin just loves her new flat screen TV!

Cute
What kind of fish do you have in there? I thought about getting a betta awhile ago and even got a decent sized really good brand of tank and set up at a great price but haven't gotten around to it yet.

The cats used to be interested in the gerbils way back when they were kittens. I have three geriatic mice now and the cats ignore them. Guess mice aren't as fun as gerbils. I'm thinking of one day getting guinea pigs or a hedgehog. I wonder how the cats would react to a bigger small furry

We only have 2 zebras and 2 of something orange and clear that I can't remember the name of. I also have 2 guppies and a cat fish in another tank.

I want a hedgehog too. They are soooo cute. The pet store had one and I got to hold it. I had to wear a special glove though, so I don't know how it felt. It was so adorable when it rolled into a ball and then opened up and stared at me. I fell in love with and have wanted one since. Maybe some day.

How big is your tank? I only ask because Zebra Danios are schooling fish and you need to have at least 6 of them so they don't get stressed out (the more the better though). And can you elaborate on the orange and clear fish?

Also most species of catfish are much too agressive to be kept with guppies!!!

I have autism and Freshwater fish are one of my obsessions. I actually have a 125 gallon aquarium in my room. Haha.

Hedgehog quills are pretty soft, not prickly at all.

If I ever get another small animal, I'm going to the shelter to adopt. I know the local shelter always has guinea pigs and the more common furries and occasionally hedgehogs. There is local hedgehog breeder, too. I'm not sure if the breeder just sells babies or also retired adult breeders.

Wow.
How do you keep all of those plants alive in the aquarium? When I had one they all died and I had to then fish out the fish and turtles and scrub everything  because the dying plants left some kind of slime all over everything that clogged my filters.
(Another thing Petsmart lied to me about; the plants were marked for "beginners".)

A very long time ago, way back when I had Sweet Thing, I got a goldfish.  Sweets didn't like getting her paws wet, so I thought the goldfish would be safe.  Wrong!   Live and learn, I guess.

I saw a cartoon once.  Two cats are talking, and one is explaining to the other, "I swear I thought they were real fish!  And nobody ever told me about something called 'liquid crystals,' so I didn't know that my claws could hurt the computer screen!"

Well, keeping plants in aquariums isn't really for beginners. But it all depends on what kind of lighting you have, and what type of substrate (you know, the stuff on the bottom of the tank- sand, gravel, nutrient rich eco-complete gravel) you have.

I have what is called a walstad setup, where you put about an inch of organic potting soil on the bottom of the tank, and then cover it with an inch of gravel or sand. (I have black sand covering mine). The soil provides my plants that are root-feeders with nutrients so I don't have to spend a fortune on aquarium plant fertilizers.

Certain plants require a certain amount of light in order to be healthy. There are great low-light plants that can grow in tanks that don't have optimal light (some examples are jungle val, water wysteria, anubis and crypts) . Any tank that you buy as a "kit" that comes with a light is not going to work for growing plants (since most come with weak incandescent lights, LED lights that don't provide the correct spectrum of light for plants, or weak florescent lights like T8 bulbs). You really need a T5 florescent fixture with 7000k (7000k light temperature) daylight bulbs or a nice LED fixture that is specialized to grow plants (which is what I have).

It also depends on the depth of your tank, as the taller your tank is, the further your plants will be from the light, and the less light your plants will actually be able to use.

Also, as a general rule, I'd never buy fish or plants from petsmart. I also would never immediately trust any information any petsmart (or any large chain pet store) employee tries to tell you about fish. They generally don't know squat about the fish they're selling, and will give you the wrong information. NEVER LET ANYONE TRY TO CONVINCE YOU THAT PUTTING ANY FISH IN A FISHBOWL IS SAFE OR HUMANE (YES THIS INCLUDES BETTAS!) FISHBOWLS ARE LITERAL DEATH TRAPS FOR FISH. THEY ARE AWFUL AND I TRULY CANNOT FATHOM WHY THEY ARE STILL SOLD IN PET STORES.

Pet stores drive me crazy. They are extremely ill informed and don't really seem to care too much about the care of pets. For example, they still sell wire cages for hermit crabs. This is stupid since these animals have to have humidity to survive. They need something that can hold humidity not wire cages.

For a long, long time I saw cell phones as nothing more than sophisticated leashes with which people could talk to me anywhere I went. (I come from a huge family, and sometimes I just need to get away for an hour or two without any  interruptions at all.) Even after my car started breaking down on a regular basis (the alternator kept snapping, and the front passenger tire kept losing air--not sure why), I resisted carrying a cell phone. I still have a habit of forgetting it in odd places (leftover from the days when I didn't want to take one with me anywhere), and I keep a flip phone because 1) I'm used to the design and can use it easily and 2) the phone cost less than twenty dollars (it was on sale) and I'm just not that attached to it. Sure, something might happen to the phone and I'll have to get a new one, but it's easy to replace (just about every store carries one, or did back when I got mine). Of course, the people I live with see that my phone can send and receive calls and texts (and that's it--no pictures, no photos, no music) and shake their heads at my outdated phone while panicking every time they set their smartphones down and forget where. (One time AWM left hers in a bar--but that's a long story.) Point is--I will probably never be a smartphone convert, but that's okay. I can recognize the value of them and congratulate people when they've made a really good deal. (AWM managed to get her current phone for thirty dollars--I have no idea how, that thing is almost the size of a tablet!)
I only hand out my number to people I want to call me, or to recognize who it is when I call them, and I always turn it off while driving.  Oh, yes, and when I get phone spam, I use caller ID blocking so that I don't have to deal with that person again.  (When I was visiting my mother and brother in Oregon a couple of years ago, I got a call on my old clam shell cell phone from some interior decorator in Wyoming, asking for "Mark."  My brother's name is Mark, and I couldn't figure out why he would have given my cell phone number to an interior decorator in Wyoming, of all places.  Eventually it came out that the guy was trying to call a client in Colorado [same area code as my phone] who happened to be named Mark.  Then he called again.  It appears that my number was just one digit off from his client's number, and he kept mis-dialing, so I put a block on his number.  Then he called again, from a different phone!  Sigh.  I hope he got as tired of talking to me as I got of talking to him.)

I've been incredibly indolent today.  I fed the cat and myself (Roger handles his own meals), I dealt with most of my email, and I played computer games and watched television.  And now I'm about to get dressed and go to the grocery store for some more cashew milk.

Good night, everyone.  Margret
