my cat is 9 weeks pregnant and shes been sleeping in her nest area a bit she licks her genitals. she has tummy cramps like contractions and does not eat much like she did and shes huge like a huge foot ball she will walk for a bit then lie on her side and she has dried white stuff on her teats. Are the babys alomost her and also does she keep them warm. please reply with useful things.

It sounds like she's getting quite close. Could be tonight or in the next couple days. Are you asking if she keeps them warm after they're born? She does, and they'll snuggle together but it's best to offer them a heat alternative as well, such as a rice sock or heating pad (only covering half of the nest).

Yes, she is close. The dried white stuff is milk. Do you have nest options set up for her? Kittens can't regulate their own body temperature until three weeks. Mom should keep them warm, but adding a heat source is also helpful.

It would also be wise to get a small scale, kmr (kitten milk replacer, powdered by PetAg is best), and a needleless syringe in case you need to supplement.

Excessive licking of her genitals is a sign, as are contractions so I would say yes she is about to have kittens. The white stuff is either dried milk or dry skin. She should keep them warm but make sure she has a nice warm place to birth them.

In any litter there is risk that a kitten won't make it. Things like being born early, being the runt, not being warm or eating enough. You'll need to keep a close eye on them the first few weeks and make sure they're eating well. As mentioned, weighing them is a great way to monitor that.

Can you post a picture of her? If you are seeing contractions, then she's probably in stage one labor. It can last up to 24 hours. Be patient!

How did you get this cat? What happened to her first two litters?

Just snap a picture of her relaxing and post it! What's her name?

Start over.  Put raw rice in a sock, tightly packed - no water.  Microwave for 5 minutes and it should hold the heat for 3-4 hours.  Be sure to wrap a towel around it because it will be really hot at first. I recommend an oven mitt for retrieval.

Make sure there is room for the kittens and mom to move away from it if they get too warm.
