okies my husband and I have decided to that we want to start helping the ferals and strays in our area , where do we start? where do we look? is there some sort of listing that tells us if its legal or not to feed ferals in our state? I was reading its illegal in some places.

Any tips or what ever you want to share please do so

Puerto Rico... land of rice and beans.
Ok, as far as legality in Vermont, you should try to ask anybody involved in Animal Rescue and such. Perhaps a vet or someone like that. You could try asking anybody in a shelter. Those people are more bound to know.

Now, I have always left cat food outside in the garage for the tons of cats that wonder around. I started with this when they got near the house a lot.. probably smelling cats indoors and food, they realized that the humans there were dumb enough to feed them so lets stick close
.

Perhaps doing the same as I do of leaving dry cat food outside will help attracting them. That's step number one.

Yippee!!! Another feral helper!

Contact Alley Cat Allies through http://www.alleycat.org

They have a network of feral friends and will be able to point you to groups in Vermont. They will also be able to help you figure out any laws that apply in your state.

But careful what you wish for!
If you are going to start feeding the cats that are ferals, then you need to be sure you can follow through with their care, including trapping and spaying and neutering. AlleyCatAllies is a great organization, but you have one in Northern Virginia called Lend A Paw that can help to set you up.
If that is close to you?
