Rocket, our 4 week old foster arrived on Friday evening full of energy and curiosity.  Friendly, playful, cuddly, everything a kitten should be.

Went to the vet this morning assuming it was a simple URI; little fever, crusty eyes, a few sneezes, little appetite and he began throwing up.

The vet gave the kitten a little food and left the room for a minute.  when she returned he had vomited the food he ate along with some bile.  She decided to give him a small shot of a strong anti-nausea med and a small shot of an antibiotic until he could keep his food down and then we would give him clavamox.  She was concerned and said she would call us to check in later.

Two and a half hours later at home I offer wet food, no KMR - per the vet's instructions.  He was happy to eat, ate a few bites and started vomiting and walking a few steps and more vomit.  I think he may have aspirated some it because then he looked like he was going to vomit but it sounded a bit like a cough.  Then he was shrieking when he vomited.  Called the vet and they said bring him back in.

the vet hospital did a free x-ray (I did have permission from the rescue for this but kept my mouth shut) and didn't see any blockage or pneumonia.  Also did a draw to see if he had FIP fluid - none.  The next diagnostic tool was an ultrasound because Rocket was too thin for all his organs to show up on the x-ray - or to put him to sleep.  The vets (His vet had been checking with all the vets at the hospital for help with a diagnosis) felt since this was moving so fast with no obvious cause he would last long.  Luckily the rescue made the decision and I didn't have to - when I was asked what I thought the vet said I didn't have enough experience to decide.

Well, it's 6pm and no call from the vet regarding a miraculous recovery and I guess the deed is done. RIP Rocket.

Just last night he was climbing the stairs and escaping from his big box.  Yesterday he was exploring and learning to pounce. Saturday he was figuring out how to jump over things and Sunday had it down and ran around the room jumping over everything. Trying to climb the cat tree and curtains.  He was the cutest kitten.

It's hard, wondering if I could have prevented this or if I somehow caused it.

Now I have to clean the room.  What happens with his blanket that his savior gave him.  She, who bottle fed him for 2 days and gave him toys and played with him.  I was told she cried when she surrendered him to the rescue.  Will she be contacted and be told the rescue she entrusted to find him a home and care for him failed?

Enjoy yourself on the other side.  You were loved by everyone who met you.

Oh, Handsome Kitty!! What a shocking development. I'm so sad!!!! How are you doing? Are you ok?? Poor Rocket!!

Please don't feel guilty, I'm wondering if he had a reaction to the antibiotic. I've heard Convenia has had some deaths reported with it. If so, it's supposed to be reported.

You did nothing wrong, nothing. I'm so so so so sorry for your loss. Perhaps Rocket was so much sicker than anyone knew.

He seemed so healthy when we got him, gaining weight and loving food.

I wondered about that but he began throwing up before he got it.  He also got a 3 & 1 shot on Friday before we picked him up.  Sometimes that can make them ill as well.  It happened so quickly.

I'm ok - I'll just cry for a few days or so.

If he was spitting up bile something very serious was going on.  Bile should not be in your stomach.

Sometimes all we do is still not enough, that sweet baby only shared his life with those who loved him for such a short time, it is a tragedy and a heartbreaker. Don't feel guilt or think in some way it was your fault, you did all you could, the only thing you are guilty of is loving him. If a vet could not save him, there was little to be done.

He would never want you to be so sad when remembering him, he loved you so much for bringing comfort and care into his life and only wanted the best for you. Please don't let this end your fostering career, that would be another tragedy, there are so many that are so desperate, they need someone to open their hearts. Love is the first thing, and the most important, to bring to these special ones, expertise comes with time. You have this site to help you when you are overwhelmed, we have many years of experience to give to you, and we will also mourn with you for your loss. Unfortunately we are well versed on losing those that are precious to us too, death comes to all living things. It is up to us to make the living full of love and happiness.  Grief always brings guilt and all those should haves, could haves, you have to grieve and then go on  to help others in Rocket's sweet memory.  I cry with you for the loss of something so precious, I'll pray for you both, RIP sweet Rocket, you will be mourned by many and loved forever more!

Oh hun,
You didn't fail him. You cared for him and got him to the vets the minute you noticed a problem. Unfortunately these things happen, but I know you did your best. I'm so sorry
RIP Rocket

I am so sorry for your loss. Sending you hugs. He is adorable and I am sure your heart hurts. Sometimes they have to leave us before we are ready.

XOXOXOX
Always they leave us before we're ready, sorry to say, except when we leave them before they're ready.

Poor little Rocket.  May he fly high, back to the place from whence he came.  We will all remember him.  At least he lived long enough to have a name that was right for him; I love your description of him learning to jump over things.

Such a tragedy.

I'm just so sorry.

You kept him safe and warm and fed while he was with you those five days and that's more than so many cats ever get in a lifetime.

You were a good custodian to Rocket.

Thank you everyone.  Tomorrow will be hard.  I need to clean our the room he was in and wash his blanket.  The carrier is still in my van.  I was in tears most of the drive home, after crying in the vet's lot, I had to pull over once on the way home.

Fluffy's been looking for him and can't figure out where he's hiding.
