My cat Melody has been pregnant for about 9 weeks and I don't know the exact date but the last time she was in heat was about 9 weeks ago. She hasn't eaten a thing today and has been acting strange... She's been restless and want nothing to do with anything but the floor. She has been laying down in my foyer all day. She is also a first time mom. Cute little Melody has been looking so pitiful which is unusual. She normally has been all about attention but not today. I'm a little bit worried about her... Please hurry up and reply.

It sounds like she's getting close to delivering. Do you have nest options set up for her? How about kitten supplies, like a scale to weigh them daily, kmr (kitten milk replacer - powdered by PetAg is best), and a needleless syringe in case of needing to supplement?

Do you plan to have mom spayed once this litter is weaned?

She has a box in my room with a sheet. We have a couple of scales, a normal scale and a kitchen scale. I would prefer to use the kitchen scale first because it gives more details. I don't have a kitten milk replacer but a needleless syringe. I think that after the kittens are about 6 months old we plan on getting her spayed. :) I have put food and water in her box every day so that she likes the box and I've made her spend atleast fifteen minutes a day in her box. Her stomach seems to be dropping a tiny bit.

A kitchen scale is perfect - you'll need the measurements in small increments.

Mom and kittens should all be spayed well before the kittens are 5 months old. At that point, the kittens will be going into heat and the males may be able to impregnate them. Not good! Mom can and should be be spayed when the kittens are 8 weeks old. Can you keep her inside and away from intact males until then? She can get pregnant again within a week of delivery; multiple heat cycles and/or pregnancies are not healthy.

OK, so I think we will get the mom spayed as soon as possible because she has worms (at least we think she does) and the male cat that is not in heat has to go as soon as possible because he is the worst trouble maker. :p that means that we also will keep one kitten most likely because... Yeah. Only one cat is an inside and outside cat and that is the father who we want to get rid of.

Mom needs a dewormer sooner rather than later. The vet can recommend what is safe to give a pregnant cat. She will likely need to be treated 2-3 times over a month or two to completely resolve the issue.

Male cats do not go into heat. They can mate whenever and wherever. He should not be around the female until he has been neutered for around a month. Otherwise he is still fertile.

Why do you want to get rid of the father? What will you do with him?

The father is not our cat exactly. He just showed up on our doorstep needing love so we are trying to find him a new home. We can probably keep him outside or away from my girl until we find him a home. We probably can find a nearby shelter or give him to the humane society.

Also sorry... I meant the male can't go into heat. [emoji]128514[/emoji] thanks for correcting me. :)

If you get the male cat neutered he will calm down considerably. You need to put mom in her own room so she has privacy and safety for herself and her kittens. It can be in your room, and then the male cat cannot bother her. If you give the male cat to a shelter he will live in a cage, and possibly be euthanized, unless it is a no-kill shelter. Neuter him and he will be a much nicer pet! It's nice that you have been caring for him. It's upsetting when people want to "get rid of" their pets. Check with your local Humane Society - they offer low-cost spays and neuters. Are you a minor? [emoji]128522[/emoji]

I know that we can give the cat to the humane society and that we can get him spayed. The shelter nearby is a no kill. I love the cat but he just doesn't love me. I don't think we have enough money to get him spayed... I'm notably doing something wrong here. The male is very mean and will scratch you if you touch him and he hates the other cats. I just want him to be happy and he doesn't seem happy here. I'm feeling so stupid right now.

The male cat is currently being controlled by his hormones. He is aggressive and on edge because he needs to defend his territory and find mates, fighting off other aggressive males in the process. You will both be happier if you can get him neutered, and that will also give you a sense of his real personality. Where are you located? We could help you to find a low cost clinic?

If you cannot do this, I agree that giving him to a truly no-kill shelter where he will be properly taken care of is the best choice. Mom and any kittens will need to be spayed / neutered regardless.

Male cats are neutered, not spayed. For males, the procedure is external, quick, and easy, and yields good results. Males generally become much less aggressive and friendlier. I doubt you've done anything wrong. The male sounds like he's not well socialized though. This happens when they are not handled enough by humans when they are young. They become semi-feral, and often do not trust humans enough to be lap cats or very affectionate.
