Update: The scabs in her ear are starting to fall off! I was rubbing the base of her ear (it soothes her) and I realise that a big chunk of scab was hanging off of her fur. I gently moistened it and tugged it off, luckily the skin underneath is nice and pink and healed! She has a trillion other scabs in her ears, but I'm hoping that with time they will all heal. Can't wait till I can upload pictures of her chubby and healthy!

2 pieces of chicken may not be enough food, but it's also not nutritionally complete. He needs nutrients like taurine in order to grow and thrive. How big are the pieces of chicken?

Oil doesn't work immediately. You can continue adding it and hopefully it will help.

I hope the antibiotics help. You're very focused on all of the details, which is great. I also don't think you should fixate on what caused what. I don't know if falling in the water caused the ear issues, or if burns caused the ulcers. They may just be symptoms of an illness. It may help to look at him with a bit more of a big picture eye so his needs are less specific. It will be easier to find common cases, etc.

The liquid suspension would be easier, in my opinion.  He might do better with a capsule but you have to be taught how to do that.  I never was good at doing that, but I can draw up a liquid and squirt it in their mouths.  So I would defer to the experts on how to give a capsule.  There are pill pockets that the pill can be wrapped in, however some find the kitty eats the pill pocket and discards the pill!  Some have said they wrap the pill in cheese and give it no problem but then you might have the same situation: cheese eaten/pill spit out.  This is why, for me, it's easier to give a liquid.

If you get the capsule, you could still open it up carefully and mix that dose in a syringe with some water or some chicken broth (plain broth without onions or garlic!)  But you have to be careful to get the whole dose and don't spill any of the powder.

The kitty needs complete nutriion in canned food.  Chicken bites are not enough.  They don't contain all the vitamins and minerals they need to get healthy and stay healthy.  What brands are availiable in your area?  Good nutrition for this kitty is vital!  He won't get well unless he is fed well.

Hi    Sounds like you know but just incase careful pulling scabs off they protect a wound from infection. ie/ best to not  wash break scabs open lots of healing is going on underneath them.

To early can cause infection, If it's little effort to peal come off then you know.

Capsules yes can be broken then saved just wrap keep in a dry safe place use up very shortly.

Can you not buy kitten food? Moist anything? It's great to raise on raw but this is an ill kitten. Varied diet is best get that tummy FULL!

Good luck getting all the meds attention that's needed

Love the happy spread out pose Sweet!

I don't know about your area but here we can buy amoxicillian in the fish department-it is a powder-my coworker told me about it but he had to get empty capsules and cap it because it tastes HORRIBLE.

I found this old thread: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/105631/the-administration-of-fish-mox/30

Maybe this is something that is an alternative? This kitten needs medicine so if this is how we go about treating-it will be the best thing at this point.

Canned kitten food mashed into a slurry is what you can start the kitten eating to get the required minerals/vitamins etc.

Just found this thread and read it from beginning to end.
You seem to be doing very well. Kudos to you. Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to reading more about the kitty getting better.

Get the suspension.  You need to make sure he gets all the medicine and if you are sprinkling it on his food it may change the taste and he won't eat it.  then you won't know how much he has had.

BTW this can cause diarrhea.  So you may want to get or make some unflavored pedialyte just in case it does more than clearing his 'lack' of going.

Yes! I'm glad I was right about the dosage. He only weighs a pound at the moment, give or take a little (I keep pestering Mum for some scales but she's yet to get some!) so I will give him 4mg every day for about 7-10 days.

He eats liver soup as well. It's like a thick slurry type of thing that has liver and the stuff we call 'red meat' over here. I THINK that means lungs and kidneys and stuff, it's basically all the stuff that the butcher doesn't sell and gives away for pet-food. I give him a choice between the meat chunks or the soup and most of the time he chooses both. I occasionally mix a bit of yogurt in the soup to make it thick. Would this still be too few nutrients or do I need to add something else? Oh! And he gets buffalo's milk. He is reluctant to drink milk so I dropper feed him that.

And oh alright! He hasn't pooped for 2 days so far, is this alright? His stomach isn't swollen or anything or firm, it's nice and soft but still rounded. I don't think I've ever been so keen to see a kitten poop!

Alright I will try to do that. I have a feeling that the antibiotic will clear up a lot of his problems (fingers crossed). When will I start seeing an improvement in his runny nose etc? Will the antibiotic kick in right away?

That's what I thought, it'd be easier to get the exact does with the liquid too. Mum doesn't want to have to waste the entire bottle, though :-( I will work at persuading her into it, hopefully it will work! Would it work if I sprinkle the powder onto one of his chicken chunks (he REALLY loves chicken), it's worth a try right? Or I could add it to his liver soup? Would it still work eventhough it's mixed with food?

I don't think canned food is very common over here, I've never seen it in any shops. I have a bag of kibble though (it's a brand called Kitty Kat), but Sparrow turns his nose up at it! I've tried mixing it with his chicken, putting it into his soup, but he always spits the pieces back out again :-( I leave them out for him all the time though, just in case he starts to nibble at them. He's starting to sniff at them a lot more, so fingers crossed he starts eating them soon!

Could I mix the powder with a little water and syringe feed him it all? Another user said that this could possibly irritate his throat/stomach. Maybe if I mix it with his soup? I will do my best to get the suspension though!

And how common is the diarrhea? We don't have pedialyte over here, but we have ORS (Oral Rehydrating Salts) so I will see if I can get them. When he came here he was severely dehydrated, so I gave him some honey water. Could this work as a substitute?

This is a picture of her from yesterday, she's under her bed that I made under my own bed so she doesn't get any chills from the fan :-) Excuse the blob on her nose! She had some liver soup while I was at tuition and it had dried by the time I'd come back lmao. I've noticed that it looks like she's smiling when she's just laying down, it's super cute :-)

The suspension that isn't used can be kept in the refrigerator and you would have it on hand for other cats who need it.

You could mix it with water, but I don't know the dose.  the other thing to look for is the strength of the medicine.  The suspension is for kids and the strength would be lower than capsules which are for adults.

Hi @indie-n-button  !

I just can't make the time to read all through this thread now, but I would love to get a quick rundown of what is going on, age/weight/treatments/appetite/issues.

Kitten is definitely anemic, so needs some good nutrition to heal that, and time.

Be sure there are no fleas! This is likely a good part of why she is anemic now and will prevent recovery.

What antibiotic do you need help with the dosage on?

Ors is OK to use yes.  Basic Home made pedialyte may be for example,  honey water with a little salts in.  Common kitchen salt is OK to begin with.

My contemporary favorite is, you take some good minerale water, which does contains lotsa of natural  salts.  You add a glucose sugar source, for example honey, stir it and warm up a little, so its blended and the gas goes out.  And voilá!  You do have a first rate homemade pedialyte.   Two tea spoons of glucose sugar source in a 33cl bottle, or 1,5 soup spoons on a litre.  You may dilute the minerale water a little, if you think its a shade too salty.

Another receipt, is you overboil rice, preferably in such mineral water.   Take up the water from the rests.    And again, voilé!  the water from overcooked rice contains lotsa of natural glucose sugar, and salts and electrolytes you have from mineral water.  (you can have some common water too, not all must be mineral water).

This another receipt perhaps especielly good in diarrhea - overboilded rice gruel is a classic home remedy for diarehea....

This sounds as a good base for feeding now, and possibly always.

There is apparently a need for calcium. Yoghurt and buffalo milk does contain it, but he will probably need a little more still.

FAT, this diet has too little fat for a kitten.  There are several possibilities. You can always melt in some butter.  You can have some yellow from eggs.  For now the eggs shold be boiled, to avoid any risks from salomonella.  Later on, when he is fully healthy, you can probably give him raw egg yolk - cats manage salomonealla better than humans.  But whom wants to experimentate on a weak, sick kitten??  So boiled as now, and nicely made into this slush.

You can also add some  coldpressed olive oil, or coconut oil.   How much he can really take up, there are different opinions.  Cats dont have much use of  non animal products.

BUT  some olive or other vegetable oil is a mild remedy for constipation...   So here you get two flies at one stroke.

Somebody mentioned taurine.  Taurine is naturally in muscles and other animal products, so I presume he should get enough with this diet.  Cat food does has added taurine, my understanding is, its because the level of real animal products in kibble is rather low.  also, the meat which is there, is processed, so some of the taurine gets destroyed.  So THEY must add taurine, but you probably arent forced to it.

Dont overdo the liver.  SOME liver is good and healthy, but liver is very rich in A-vitamine, and too much A-vitamine isnt good.

I heard that it would go out of date after a while? I will talk to the pharmacist about it.
I found that we can get suspensions that contain 125mg/5ml so I would have to give her 0.2ml to give her a 5mg? Would that be the same as 0.2cc?

Hello! I'll answer your questions below:

Age: 10/11 weeks old
Weight: We haven't got a scale but he feels about 1 pound ish? He's very underweight for his age but he's gained a little since he's been here. Stomach is nice and rounded, not too firm but not too soft.
Treatments: He's had a homeopathic medicine (Merc. Sol) for some ulcers/burns on his tongue. The tongue is now 100% healed and is no longer bleeding.
Appetite: Very good! He asks for food every hour or so and I give him raw chicken, yogurt, milk, liver, 'red chicken stuff', and a little dab of coconut oil here and there. He's drinking plenty of water
Issues: His ears are infected (???) He shakes his head a lot and one of his ear is full of scabs that appear to be bloody and very hard. The scabs are all dried up inside his ear, though when I checked his ear a few days ago there seemed to be a yellow/green discharge. He did fall into a pool of sewage water a while ago (about two weeks ago?) and water was in his ears. I removed most of it by wiping it out. I'm no longer touching/cleaning his ears. He also has a runny nose that is occasionally tinted with pink. Eyes aren't watering and there is no third-eyelid. No wheezing, just sneezing. His front top teeth bleed just a little every so often, though that hasn't happened today. Her last poop (about 2 days ago?) was also black and tarry at the end (I have a picture if you'd like to see?)

Do you know any specific foods that will help with the anemia? Would the red chicken stuff help as it's very bloody?
And nope, there are no fleas!

And amoxicillin? I have done some research and found that she needs 4mg as she is only a pound, is this correct? I am unsure if I will be able to get the suspension or the capsules full of powder. Also will one dose a day for 10 days be enough to clean the URI? I heard humans get amoxicillin 3 times a day! Also will I have to give her the suspension on it's own or can I squirt it in some chicken and wrap it up. Is there any foaming at the mouth with amoxicillin? And how long does the runny poops normally last for?
.

I think the water we get here is mineral water anyway, it comes from a very deep well that's by our house! I will make her honey water just in case she gets dehydrated, that helped a lot last time she was dehydrated. If it doesn't help, I will have ORS in stock,  though it is hard to find an unflavoured one -- they normally come in orange and lemon, but I'll ask Mum to keep looking.

Also about the fat, there's sometimes fat on the chicken she eats? Like white bits? She seems to like eating them the best. We can also get pure animal fat over here, if that could help? It's the fat they remove from the chickens that no-one wants. We don't normally get it for our cats, but I'm sure we could if we asked the butcher! She is getting coconut oil as well, ye, just a small amount (like half a hard blob that's half the size of my finger nail) in her soup. She gets roughly 4 dollops of yogurt a day and a bowl of milk (she seems to be going off of milk)

And I feel as if she should be getting enough taurine. Liver is very rich in taurine from what I've heard, as are the lungs/kidneys ect. I'm not cooking her chicken or liver (she seems to like it raw not cooked, anyway) so I think there should be enough taurine. Don't kittens need a smaller quantity than adults, anyway? They only have tiny bodies! My other cats are also on the same diet (not the soup though) They get yogurt about every other day, buffalo's milk every day, liver about once or twice a week (as well as heart and the red stuff) and they get chicken heads and chicken breast too! Oh, and chicken feet.

And I'm not sure if I mentioned it above, but her tongue is now 100% okay! I checked it this morning and it's back to normal (no white or red bits), so I'm stopping the homeopathic medicine :-) I will give her a rest from medicine today, and start the amoxicillin tomorrow! We'll need a new syringe too, because the other one got broken :-( It's a 1cc syringe so it should be easy to measure out the dose. Could I mix the dose of the suspension into some of her soup and feed it to her that way? Or won't it work? If I get the capsule I'll sprinkle some onto her chicken and feed it to her in the morning (she's more hungry in the morning and eats p much everything I give her!). Or would it be better if I give her her food and then after that give her a squirt of the suspension? Would it irritate her throat/mouth?

you can surely blend the medicine with the food, its a standard with pills, for example.

Im not sure what happens if the medicine suspension has a bad taste (some brands taste awfully).  Try to hide it in food when she is hungry,  but risk she doesnt eats, or connects for ever this food with bad taste,  OR forcefeed her...

Earlier I saw you asked if ml = cc,   yes its is so.  so 01 of one is equivalent to 0,1 of the other.

Im very happy to hear the tongue has healed now.  So no more bleeding either?   And the poo not longer tar-black  (in some part)?

Re deep water.  Im not sure if its equivalent with "mineral water" on bottle.   I mean these mineral waters which contain quite a few different salts. You see it on the label, they usually do boast, these salts, and these jones, and these minerales...

If you dry out your water, by boiling it out, and there is a salty residue left, yes, it contains minerals and should do.  If not, you have an excellent clean water but must buy a bottle of mineral water....

Okay I will try mixing it with her food, or maybe even some yogurt? She doesn't get yogurt on it's own, but mixed with the soup, so hopefully that won't affect how much she eats her chicken etc. Also if we get the capsules can we dissolve a capsule in some water to make our own suspension kind of thing? Like if we dissolve an entire 250mg capsule in 5ml of water, we'd still have to give her 0.2cc to give her an entire dose. Would this work if we ensure the entire capsule has dissolved?

Okay I will buy a bottle of mineral water just in case the water I get isn't the same! :-)

Oh and I forgot to answer your question about his tongue!

He has no more bleeding, no, it's not ready either and it's the right shape, the ulcer above on his top teeth has gone too. And regarding his poops, I'm not too sure. He may have some tarryness in it when he poops next because he hasn't pooped in roughly 2 days and the ulcer was bleeding yesterday. Fingers crossed he poops soon! I've also started adding a little butter to his soup, as well :-)
