Hi everyone. Thursday morning my cat Kai went to the vet with a Urinary Obstruction and needed overnight care and to be catheterized twice. He was finally given the "okay" to come home yesterday and I was prescribed both Novo Prazin - 1/2 a tablet every 12 hours, and Metacam once daily for 7 days starting this morning.

This morning as I was getting ready to give him the Metacam I decided to do a quick search on it and found a ton of pages saying not to give Metacam to cats because of potential risks of renal failure. I also found a more recent thread on this forum saying Metacam is safe but should be monitored when giving it to them... The problem is I had to leave the house today and won't be home until about 6:00 tonight and there isn't going to be anyone else there to keep an eye on him, I'm already a nervous wreck leaving him unattended for so long, so soon after his obstruction, the added risks of renal failure didn't even seem like an option to me, so I opted to forego giving him the Metacam. Now I'm questioning if I made the right call?

I don't want him to be in pain, but I also don't want something to happen to him when no one is there to monitor him...

Do you think I made the right call?

It's hard to say.  Metacam isn't without controversy, its black labeled in the US, but can be given safely.  My vets never use metacam, and personally i prefer buprenorphine, an opioid, but very safe.  I'd call your vet and discuss on the phone.  And how's your cat now?

Thanks for your response. He seems to be okay. He has been peeing small amounts pretty frequently, but I've read some posts saying that was normal after being catheterized, if it continues I am going to call the vet and see what they say, though I am wondering if it may be due to pain, especially since I skipped his last does of Metacam... I am thinking about starting him on the Metacam now that someone will be there to observe him. He had a dose at the vet and was fine, I just don't want to take the chances of him having a bad reaction when no one is there to see it. Does anyone have any experience with missing doses when it comes to Metacam? Do I just continue on as scheduled?
