Our cat is having the I-31 radiation treatment today. He will stay at the vet 4 or 5 days until his radiation level is low enough to be discharged. Some of the aftercare instructions aren't completely clear to me. I've asked and researched and gotten very different answers. My main concern is that my 9 month old grandbaby is here one day a week for 9 hours, and I know that her still-developing systems are much more sensitive to radiation than mine or my husband's. One vet's advice was to keep them 6 feet away from each other for the first 2 weeks. She didn't make a big deal out of it and said she realized there will be times that he will still walk past her. Another told me the safest protocol is to lock the cat in the basement when she is here. A reputable online source said that the baby should not even be allowed at our house until 80 days have passed. I'm willing to do whatever is necessary to keep the baby safe, but I don't know exactly what that is at this point. Anyone else have a cat do I-31 treatment with little ones in the home? What guidelines were you given?

Can you ask your granddaughter's pediatrician? That might be better.

Or speak with someone where your cat will be getting the treatment. Is is at an animal hospital, rather than a regular Vet?

I will call her pediatrician tomorrow and see what they say. It is an animal hospital, but everyone gives me a different answer as to what is safe. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond!

Oh, I felt bad that no one responded. That does not happen very often.

Most posts are responded to, in record time.

I was an x-ray tech in my last 'life', as I call it...LOL

Would you be able to call and speak to a Radiologist, at the Vet hospital?

They are the doctors who read the x-rays and could probably give you the most up to date information.

It may take a while, for someone to get back to you, but be persistent.

At least, I would....

That's a great idea! I will put in a call to the radiologist. I am also going to call the veterinary college and possibly the pediatrician's office. It is frustrating that I haven't been able to get clear directives as of yet, but I will be persistent as my granddaughter's wellbeing is at stake. You are such an empathetic soul to feel badly that no one responded. Thank you from one orange cat mama to another!
