Do any of you all administer enema to your cat? How often do you administer it? And how much enema is too much for the cat?

My cat is constipated and my vet prescribed cisapride and miralax. They didn't work. He already had a couple of enemas at the clinic and he gets so stressed out. So I have to try enema at home. I have bought an enema from vetdepot.com and will be getting it sometime this week.

I would not do this without speaking to your vet first. One, they can give you other medical alternatives if the ones you have aren't working. Two, they may be able to instruct you. It may be more traumatic for you to do this.

Have you tried adding plain canned pumpkin to your cat's diet?

Yes I tried pumpkin, slippery elm, psyllium husk, oat bran, nothing works. Psyllium husk used to work, but no more.

Vet recommended Royal Canin Fiber Response, but I was reading some posts in this forum how it turns chronic constipation to megacolon and that fiber is not good as it extends the colon.

Have you tried Miralax?  My kitty has IBD and is prone to constipation and it is what my vet recommended.  My IBD kitty has had a few enemas but they were given at a vet clinic, I never tried to give him one.

I understand wanting to do enemas at home. It's such a stressful experience for them. Fortunately I have not had to do them myself. I would have ask a vet to train you how to do it, though, just to make sure you don't do something wrong.

Probiotics are something different to try that might help. They have made my chronically constipated cat comfortable enough to go in the litter box, but she did respond to miralax and fiber initially. Lactulose sometimes works better than miralax for some cats I think. Acacia fiber powder (sold in health stores as a weight loss supplement) is novel fiber that is safe and works like psyllium husk and pumpkin.

I have never tried Acacia fiber. I can try it see if it works. I give probiotic to my cat. It helped him poop for a week, then it just stopped working.
