Hi everyone
This is my first post, I just wondered what thoughts you may have. I will try and keep it as short as I can. Thanks

On April 3, Easter, my oldest boy didn't come running to eat. I picked him up and he felt warm so I decided to isolate him because I thought he could possibly be getting a kitty cold. Later that night I changed my mind because he was acting just like my youngest male cat did when he had a urinary obstruction several years ago. When I put him by the litter box, he didn't even want to move. I took him to the vet Monday morning and they expressed his bladder, his urinalysis indicated UTI, they ran a blood test, and he got amoxicillin. I thought about asking for pain meds, but didn't. Tuesday, I had to bring him back in because he hadn't urinated again.

This time they expressed his bladder again, did x-rays, gave sub-q fluids, and gave me pain meds for him. Less than an hour after his first pill, he was up and running around and doing well. He stayed that way for the rest of the week, but Wednesday of the second week, he started kind of refusing to eat. Not realizing that nausea, vomiting, and no appetite were side effects of amoxicillin, I continued to give it to him, but he kept eating less and being really picky. Saturday morning he seemed to be feeling great again and ate, but after I gave him his amox, he seemed to feel bad again. Sunday, two weeks since it started, I decided not to give him the last two pills of amox. after he vomited a little that morning. I decided to give him some famotidine to help his tummy feel better, but I was sleep deprived and gave him 5mg in the early evening and then the other half that night.

Later that same night I fed him with a syringe and stayed up with him for a few hours to make sure he didn't throw up again. He didn't and seemed better. On Monday, however, I walked into the room he was in to see him vomiting and there was a clot of blood in it. Now, this has happened before with his sister, but her doctor didn't seem too concerned about and he said to give her famotidine. But, he continued to vomit several times, and each time there were a few clots of blood. So, I went back to the vet for a third time Monday of this week. This is where my confusion comes in.

I saw three different vets at the same practice. Vet 2 went over his x-rays and tests with me and she thought he probably also had some constipation and she said that his tests were pretty much normal. Also, as far as I can tell, ulcers are supposed to show up on x-rays, but she didn't see one. Vet 1 and 2 were pretty great to me. However Vet 3 from this week has me upset with her ways.

She palpated his abdomen and said he didn't seem to be reacting or having pain and later stated that ulcers are extremely painful. Yet, when I couldn't afford everything she recommended, pain medicine was one of the first things she took off. She wanted me to put him on amoxicillin AGAIN and didn't really say why when asked, I refused it. It is pretty clear to me that he can't tolerate amoxicillin. She gave me mertazapine and didn't mention anything about the fact that it's a drug used for depression in humans and that there are cats that have had horrible and deadly reactions to it. I am so grateful I researched it and I didn't give it to him.

Anyway, I think he is definitely constipated now. He still doesn't want to eat, but accepts food from a syringe fine. It's weird. He also readily ate a Vet's Best tablet I had for hairballs, I hope it helps to move things along. He hasn't thrown up since he threw up a Cerenia tablet they gave him at the vet Monday night. He also had Carafate, but I read that can cause constipation, so it may have made things a little worse. I found online that Zyrtec/cyproheptadine, is a safer (and OTC) alternative to mertazapine so I may try that soon.

Has anyone tried Zyrtec for appetite? Do you also think Vet 3 was being a little shady? I hate it when I feel like I can't trust a vet! Thanks!

Hi, thought I would just let you know about my daughters kitty. He has issues with constipation, and when he gets constipated he will stop eating.
He has been put on a high fibre food, and has to remain on it for life . She tried to have him on it short term, then go back to his regular food, but he became constipated again.
Last time it happened the vet did X-rays of his bowel and he was fully impacted, they had to enema him and manually remove some stool.
I hope you can get your kitty feeling better soon!

Thanks! That's too bad he has to be on special food, but I hope that never happens again. My youngest male cat was on Urinary S/O for a while after his urethral blockage, but after lots of research I was able to switch him to canned food and he's been great.

I wanted to edit my post after getting back from the store too, cyproheptadine isn't OTC in the USA yet and it isn't Zyrtec. Sorry about that. It is OTC in Canada and some other countries though.
