Last night we noticed that our one cat Ichiban (or as I affectionately call her Bon Bon) had quite the swelling at the base of her tail and she was in pain when we touched it. This morning I brought her into the vet and left her so that I could go to work. I got a call about an hour later saying that she does have an abscess and a fever so they need to put her under to remove it.They said she MAY also have a fractured tail but wouldn't know until they could put her under and manipulate the tail more. They said that they'd put a drain in her as well. I was unclear about the whole drain thing and didn't ask because the tech was kind of hard to hear over the phone.

Is anyone familiar with this? I am assuming that they put this drain in and tape it to her tail and then it stays in for a few days? Also, if it is indeed fractured, is it just a matter of waiting for it to heal?

I'm guessing you have all your answers now directly from ;your Vet?  If not, please let us know.

Hoping your little Ichiban is doing well in his recovery.

Yes, she is doing well. There was no fracture (yay!). She has the small tube attached to her tail and we can take it off after 4-5 days. She is playing and eating and chasing after and retrieving bottlecaps and her usual self. Well she was pretty much her usual self before we discovered the abscess.
