Hi gang ... I'm in Arizona and about 6 of the cats in my colony have long hair and Summers coming quick out here  ... has anybody ever used anything on food to help with hairballs or is it just not necessary?    these are fairly news cats to me (all TNR'd but weren't around last Summer) and already with it warming up i see balls of hair with weeds ect stuck in it hanging off a couple of them ...  So I know there will be a lot hacking up hairballs.   Just seeing if I could do anything to make it easier for them.

Try doing a search on egg yolk lechithin.  You can open up the capsule and sprinkle it onto their wet food.  I just ordered some to try as I have a long haired inside boy who is coughing up hairballs every few days.  I had read to give this a try as the Laxatone I was using didn't seem to make a difference.  I ordered mine through Amazon, but it's from Swanson's.

I'd like to back this advice.  I asked about this here on the site for my boy and have been using egg yolk lechithin now for months.  It hasn't completely removed the problem but I'd say it's 80% better.

You can also feed them Greenie treats for hairball along with their regular food. It would help with the hairballs and also with tooth tartar. Some cats love Greenies, some don't, but it's worth a try.

I saw a post on putting down coconut oil for them to eat as if it was dried food.  Just leave it there for them to nibble on as they like.  It might not work in the heat as I'm not sure they would be interested in lapping it up when it melted.  If you have some in your home, it's worth a try.
