Hi there!

I am new here, and I am writing to see if I can get a little bit of information before we head to the vet.

My partner and I have an 11 year old indoor cat who has had increasingly frequent digestive problems.  He seems perfectly healthy, comfortable, playful, and happy most of the time.  His bathroom habits and everything are mostly normal, but within the past year he has an issue every month or so where he'll pace in and out of each litter box in obvious distress.  Usually he'll end up with a piece of poop stuck to his butt, and we'll help him out with that, but afterward he almost always has a slightly protruding anus that dissipates within an hour or so.  He'll also sometimes throw up after this happens.

At first we thought it might be related to something he might have eaten off of the floor, or occasional constipation, and didn't think too much of it because it happened so infrequently.  During the last month or so, though, It's started happening at least once a week.  We have an appointment with the vet soon, and are anxious to bring him in.

He's definitely eating and drinking normally, and doesn't have any signs of parasites - all of our cats are indoors, so I don't think he could have been exposed to worms at all anyway.

Has anyone had this happen before?

Thanks so much!

He sounds constipated. Vomiting while straining to go is a classic sign. You can try adding some plain canned pumpkin into his regular food. A teaspoon or so per day might help to regulate him.

What do you feed him? How much and how often?

And also, you never want to pull anything stuck inside your cat out. I know it seems counterintuitive, but you need to let him pass it on his own. You could cause more harm than good.
