Does a rabies vaccine really need to be done yearly? My cats are strictly indoors and I keep them fully up to date on their vaccines, but as they are a few years old now I'm wondering if a full slate of vaccines in necessary every year?

Merial now has a 3 year PureVax rabies vaccine. A cat's very first rabies vaccination should be the 1 year vaccine and then the following year the 3 year vaccine can be started.

Some people don't have their indoor only cats rabies vaccinated despite a state law requring it. You can discuss this with your vet.

If you live in an apartment or other similar housing, pets may be required by the management company to be up to date with all vaccinations including rabies unless you have a letter from a vet saying that for medical reasons X vaccination cannot be given.

My county requires a yearly treatment and registration. Part of the cost of the treatment is the registration fee. Check with your municipality or county about what they require. The last thing you want is for your cat to bite someone and then be quarantined for weeks afterwards.
