I came across a blog entry featuring a fish shaped cookie that would be perfect for the lab I'm hoping to move to soon (I have the position, current department is being a PITA to let me go
): http://notsohumblepie.blogspot.com/2009/12/science-cookies-zebrafish.html

It's an old blog post. The blogger didn't provide any information on the cookie recipie, how to decorate so that the cookie looks almost like an actual zebrafish (other than mentioning edible glitter), or anything else.

I'm guessing a basic sugar cookie recipie will work? Does anyone know where to get that specfic fish shaped cookie cutter? I can find plenty of fish shaped cookie cutters on Google but none are the right fish shape. The blogger hasn't posted in 4 years so I'm not sure if the contact email still works or not. I'll give it a try, though.

Or something like this?  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fish-cookie...hash=item4af69c9171:m:mSjKlviqSilQosrTmzOG3vw   I can't find that exact shape either.

A basic sugar cookie recipe would work. You might want to try a sugar cookie recipe from Martha Stewart; if I can find it, I'll post it for you. I used that recipe to make palm trees and flip-flops for Rick's birthday bash party (a tiki/Tahitian theme) and those cookies came out really nice. But the recipe is a bit of a pain in that you have to chill the cut-out cookies for a time before baking them; I guess it depends on how many cookies you want to make. That being said, they were really very good.

@LTS3  This Ebay seller makes these cookie cutters on a 3D printer. According to the listing, they make all of them to order. I'd contact them to see if they can get it closer to what you need.

Here's a basic sugar cookie recipe from Martha Stewart

Here's one from Alton Brown

Yeah, any roll out sugar cookie recipe should work. Make sure the dough is super chilled before you work with it, it holds its shape better that way. (If you don't want to make your own, I've used DoughBiz refrigerated dough, and it's delicious also.)

The icing looks like royal icing. You'll need a couple different sized tips for your frosting bags. Make it a little thicker (more confectioners sugar) for the edges, let that dry, and make it thinner and a little runny for the inside. You'll kind of flood it all over the cookie, but the border of the thicker icing will hold it in. The eyes are just Wilton Candy Eyes. I'd use Wilton gel food coloring, black, just the tiniest little toothpick drop to make it gray, and then a little more to make it black. A little goes a long way.

I emailed the blogger but no response yet. I didn't get an undeliverable message so I'm guessing the email address is still active. Hopefully the blogger still checks that email address.

Neither of those cookie cutters are right. The fins are too pointy and not in the right spot like an actual zebrafish.Or maybe I'm just too picky
I might have to have one custom made. I saw a seller on Etsy that does custom cookie cutters. I wish the blogger had provided more info and links to the products used.

I was thinking of the Martha Stewart sugar cookie recipie. I'm not sure how many cookies I would need but likely a whole school of them
Two dozen or so should be plenty.

That ebay seller that @Winchester  listed seller might be able to make you one in the right shape since they make all of them to order. It's worth asking. The price is right.
