Do you let your cat sleep in your bed with you at night?

Every time I turn around, one of my boys is grooming himself.  And did you know that cat saliva contains a detergent that helps them clean their fur?  I read that somewhere; I don't remember where.
Her saliva smells like fish though. It's not something I'd like on the bed. :/

I'm afraid to let my cats sleep with me for hygienic reasons. I feel like they may track germ(s from their litter box and into my bed. How do you guys counter the hygiene issue?
I am a human doctor, not a vet, and I forgot to mention that cat's urine is sterile, (except when they have an UTI.)  Cat's faeces are, of course, not sterile but cats are fastidious animals and they cover their faeces with litter and try to avoid stepping into it, as a general rule. The litter box itself is clean, as is the litter.

I can see very little hygienic reasons why you should not allow cats to sleep with you.

With best wishes,

Geoffrey

Oh I didn't know cat pee is sterile, thanks for the info! It smells really bad though and it carries onto her feet sometimes. Maybe I'll let her in my bed once she has mellowed out a little and stopped attacking our feet and pillows!

With regard to cat's sleeping with us, our current cat, Sukie, see the Avatar, is quite elastic.  Looking at her in the Avatar, she seems small and cuddly, but when relaxed, as in bed, she stretches out to her full 1 metre (tail to nose) and likes to sleep broadside in the bed.  She hates being disturbed and when pushed to lie alongside, she gets into a huff, (sometimes she has even hissed at me) and moves over to my wife, who has the same experience when Sukie is the full yard.   My wife, however is  more pliable than I am and tends to accommodate herself to Sukie.

Sleep well with your cats,

Geoffrey

I have five cats, and sometimes four sleep in the bed with me all at once, especially when it gets chilly out. (The fifth, so far, has shown no interest.)

Everyone has a battle station they take up. It varies with the seasons and how heavy the covers are. One likes to sleep near my head in the summer, down by the middle in winter. Another likes to cuddle in the curve of your leg, or belly. Another sits by my head all the time.

All are strictly indoor cats, no diseases, all vaccinations current. It's good to be informed, and warned.

for the past 3 1/2 years, HK has slept with me on the bed.  i'm not crazy about it because whenever possible he takes up as much of the bed as he can, and now he's older, i don't like to bother him, but i need a spot to sleep, too.  also in the night he sometimes mows and mows to me.  but hey, i want him to feel safe and secure, so i lose a little sleep.  before 3 1/2 years ago, he either slept with our late cat, jeep, or with my husband.

I wrote, in a previous post nine months ago, that you haven't lived unless you go to sleep with a cat in each armpit.  You also haven't lived if you haven't been awakened at 3 AM by a cat fight.....

best regards,

Geoffrey

I love, love, love having my kitties sleep with me. If they don't come when I tell them it's time for bed, I call them after I'm in bed. I like the comfort of knowing there's another living being in bed with me.

We don't.

Our female never covers her poops up and has the tendency to step into it. My male on the other hand has occasional diarrhea and his butt smells like shit after that
. If we catch them with poops on them we will clean it up but we can't be around the litter boxes all the time, especially during nights. After several incidents of the female stepping poops on our bed we decided to ban both of them from our bedroom in bedtime. In fact I always get nervous about her "accident" so I always smell her paws.. It smells like urine most time (despite that we clean the litter boxes 1-2 time a day and she cleans her paws a lot) but that's ok with me..

I'm also a very light sleeper with sleep problems and unfortunately because of the work I do I only have about 5-6 hours of sleep every night. So I can't afford to being waken up by them chasing and fighting on us 3am in the morning... But I do enjoy curling up with my kitties. In the day time if I have time I will curl up with them on the coach or on the other bed I have especially for them.

My cats sleep where they like.  Seal sleeps near the bottom of the bed.  Sometimes he sleeps between my feet.  He is the only one who regularly sleeps on the bed.  Leo and Diamond will get on my chest and purr for five or ten minutes when I lie down.  Sometimes Leo sticks around for a while.  But Leo likes the top of the cat tree and Diamond likes the thick cotton bath mat in the bathroom.  I have wondered if they would be more comfortable if I did not have a waterbed!  The motion seems to make them nervous!

You've got problems there that are somewhat unusual. My cats don't smell bad or have poop on them. Have you had them checked out by a vet? What you are experiencing isn't normal.

I hope it's not normal! I want to believe cats are clean animals and would love to have the chance to sleep with one in the future...

I took my male (who has occasional diarrhea) to the vet but nothing came up. The vet said it should be due to his sensitive stomach. He's super picky and if we give him cans with the same flavor in a row he won't eat any, so we have to rotate three kinds of wet food. But this sometimes causes diarrhea (It doesn't seem to be due to a particular kind of food). Other than this he's perfectly health so we just give him more water and moist food to compensate for the loss of water.

My female came from the shelter this way and people from the shelter and the vet said some cats just never cover up their waste. So I guess there is nothing we can really do about it.

(Oh also I have very sensitive sense of smell. I can smell urine from their feet but my husband can't
. But as I said, I don't mind this..)

I can't sleep if at least one of mine isn't in bed with me.

Monet likes to spoon against my stomach if or side (depends what position I am in). If I roll over, he'd get up to get back to my stomach area. he doesn't like my back to him, lol. He's with me every single night.

Cassie has taken a fondness to my new bamboo pillow, so now she usually sleeps on my pillow at my head (I need to buy her own, lol). if it's cold, she''ll go under the covers to my legs. But most of the time, she prefers to sleep in my laundry basket at night
