I took my indoor/outdoor part time porch cat to the vet to get his vaccines yesterday, so I guess hes officially my cat now and he probably needs to get used to being inside most of the time despite his objections. Yesterday he was okay, a little sleepy and maybe eating smaller amounts at a time then usual but nothing too weird. This morning, however he seemed really out of it...very tired and sore and he's barely eaten anything. He's sleeping on my leg right now. Is it normal to be this fatigued 28 hours after his shots? I recently had a cat just get off of a year of medicine and supplements after his liver started failing because he wasn't eating properly, so I am VERY jumpy when a cat isn't interested in food. Should I be worried or is my anxiety getting the better of me?

Our cats get very sleepy and uninterested in food after their vaccines, too. I think it usually affects them for about a day or two. That said, if your cat still seems out-of-it tomorrow morning, you might want to give your vet a quick call, just to be sure his sleepiness is normal for whatever vaccines he got.

And good for you for taking this guy in and keeping him in!

If he's not better tomorrow, give the vet a call. Mine are usually a bit more sedate and off their food a bit for about a day after vaccines.

Thanks. :)  I know they needed to give him three and two of them were rabies and leukemia (because while I'm trying very hard to keep him in, he is trying equally hard to not be in.) He also got a blood test to make sure he didn't have leukemia. I don't know if they gave him all of them because he has a follow up appointment for 2 of the 3 shots in a few weeks. I do know he definitely got the rabies shot because I have the little tag. Kinda wish they would have warned me about this. I'm a bit of a nervous wreck when it comes to sick cats.

I know what you mean about the worrying. I'm very glad our vet always reminds us about the post-vaccine tiredness: our cats are young, active, and always hungry so I'd've worried if I hadn't known it was normal for them to seem to want to hibernate for a day or so.

I hope you're able to prevail on keeping your cat in! Does he have anything to climb, like a condo? Things like a condo and climbing posts have helped keep our young cats very active and busy inside. (I lost a wonderful indoor-outdoor cat years ago and haven't let one out since!)

I'm working on making inside more Tuna friendly, but am working on a very limited budget (my credit score is already suffering from this little guy) I'll invest in a climbing post when I can afford it though :) For now I have plastic crates stacked up by the window.

I hear you about the expenses, they can get absolutely crazy.

We've been lucky that a lot of our cats' favorite things are homemade: their climbing loft in the basement is made of weird pieces of scrap wood plus all sorts of old blankets and things we had around the house, though we did buy the sisal rope for the legs. They also love the maze we made them out of packing boxes.

Most important, I hope Tuna's back to his usual self tomorrow morning!
