I posted a few weeks ago about my cat Moscow who I call Moss, but let  me back up.... so then maybe someone here can give me advice or is able to relate because I really don't know if I'm overreacting or if this is more serious. In December/January I started feeding my cats Science Diet for sensitive stomach and to help their coats. It seemed fine until February when I noticed Moss licking a spot on the back of his neck which grew to a bald spot, looked all sore and red/pink. Then more bald patches under his chin--on BOTH sides of his neck. I took him to the vet, they cleaned him and gave me the antibiotic. I changed his food and BOOM... back to normal.

Four days after the first vet visit his right eye becomes droopy,  so I gave him that antibiotic and he was fine.

Then an abscess appeared below his chin, again I gave him the antibiotic and it cleared up within hours. One of my cats can get quite aggressive so he had a few wounds on his face, and since it happened on a Sunday, I had to wait until Monday to take him into the vet and when he went they cleaned up his wounds, shaved a bit to let them "breathe" and again I continued with the antibiotic.

The antibiotic is clindamycin, it seemed to work wonders because he was all kinds of fine and back to his normal self.

My problem is this:

He looks like he has lost so much weight it's scary. At first I thought he looked thin because they shaved his neck to get to the wounds and I kind of left it at that. But I can feel his spine when I rub my hands over his back, his bones by the base of his tail are slightly sticking out, I can feel his ribs a bit when rubbing my hands over his side. He just isn't as "full" looking OR feeling as I remember.

I checked my other two cats and neither one of them can I feel their bones like I can for him. Moss has always been quite a lean cat, but to see him like this has me in all kinds of hysterics. He was standing up on my bed and I noticed seeing his leg bones through his skin--like I can see the outline of his leg if that makes sense?? I know I should be worried because this is worrying, at some angles he looks alright just thin, and ugh.. I hate this.

He's eating normal, I got him some grain free food and he's been eating that like crazy. I feed him soft food and he eats that. I bought a color changing kitty litter that tells you if your cat as an urinary infection or not  and the color was in the normal range.

I have to wait until Monday before I find anything out... I guess I've just posted this for support and to help ease my worried mind as this really has me upset. I also just hope that someone out here has had something similar.

Anyways, thanks for reading.

It's good that you are taking him to the vet.  There are several things that can cause weight loss some very simple to take care of and some more serious but manageable.  I hope your vet can get things figured out sooner rather than later.

Have you changed his food back to what he was eating prior to the Science Diet?  Make sure they check him for thyroid problems.

I have and he wouldn't eat it for a few days so I was feeding him soft food that he ate--I'm going to ask about the thyroid and possible dental problems. Just ANYTHING that gives me a reason why he's lost so much weight. I will keep everyone updated in case this happens to anyone else.

Eating like crazy and still losing weight definitely screams thyroid issues to me. Definitely glad you are taking him to the vet and getting his thyroid checked.

he wasn't eating the Science Diet food when his coat issues were going on, but I thought he was. I noticed how thin he was getting so I gave him a can of tuna because I figured that might peak his interest he ate the whole thing like he was starving! So, I gave him some more soft food and he ate that can too. So THEN I knew he wasn't eating the Science Diet food AT ALL. So I went out and bought the purina one brand of food he always eats--but he was being very picky with it. So I proceeded to go out and buy nongrain cat food which he has eaten but... all of this seriously started since the Science Diet switch. He used to eat it and enjoyed it so I'm not sure if I got a bad batch or what... but I will definitely ask about his thyroid and teeth--I did get a flash light and looked in his mouth, his teeth looked alright but still it could be an issue I don't see and the vet can. His tongue has gone back to a darker pink--it was really light a few days ago along with his gums--but I'm blaming the antibiotic I had him on. ALSO, that antibiotic has a serious side effect so I'm also going to bring that up. I just hate this stuff... I wish there was a scanner I could buy, scan his body and it tells me everything that's wrong so then I can fix it immediately instead of waiting!!!

It could also be diabetes. The vet should definiltey test for that as well. The specific test is the fructostamine. The regular blood gluocse test only tells what the cat's level is at the moment the blood was taken.

All clear of thyroid and diabetes, kidneys are fine....it was the antibiotic that made him not eat. His liver blood count was low but that was because he was going a while without eating.
