Hello, wanting advice , I found my cat bear chewing on a elastic hair band, I dunno if and how much he ate , but am sure it was one with a metal piece on it. But I dunno if it was half of a broken one or not have no idea. I have no idea if the metal part was on it or anything. It looked like a old hair tie.

Anyway I got it off him and wasn't much there, but have no idea if he just chewed on a piece or he ate a whole lot. Not long after he pooped and we ate dinner and he is still looking for food.

What should I do? He seems ok and not acting strange or anything. He is a garbage guts and will eat things off the floor if it's dropped, we haven't had him long, but when we eat he is begging for food.
What should I look out for? As I said I dunno how much he ate or what, he has tried to eat paper as well in the past and part of a plastic bag, but he's been fine . He doesn't seem to be a fussy eater at all will eat anything. As I am in the process of changing him to a wet diet, His pretty regular with his poos and wees and they have all been fine since we had him , only started the wet food last weekend.

Is there anything I can do to help it along? Should I give him some wet food? Or what?

The first thing you should do is check inside his mouth to make sure none of the elastic is still there. Once a cat starts to swallow a piece of yarn or elastic their rough tongue makes it impossible for them to spit it out. If you can see any elastic stuck in his throat gently try to pull it out. Don't force it though, if it's stuck you'll need to get your vet to remove it.

The main thing to look out for is vomiting or lethargy. I've heard of cats chewing up hair bands and eventually passing them, but if this band had metal on it I'm not sure that he'll be able to pass it.

Could you call your vet and ask them  for advice? They'll probably suggest you bring him in for an x-ray.

I couldn't see any elastic when I saw him chewing and I dunno if there was metal on it, it looked like at some point it was one with metal, but as there is three females in the house they break , and I don't tend to buy ones know with metal, I dunno where he even got it from to be honest. Me and my girls especially my oldest tend to be very careful in picking things up of the floor. I haven't bought them types in a long time. I don't buy them anymore cos they break and they hurt as they ping you. I don't think it was a whole elastic and I really don't think it had metal on it. My girls have used old ones before and cut the metal part off and used it for hair ties on barbies etc. In future I will be even more careful. I told my oldest to put everything that is smaller than a egg in a draw and told her to put other things away. As not long ago he chewed on a plastic toy and found the piece he chewed off the next morning so he didn't swallow it. He might have done the same thing this time. He chews his food very well before he swallows it.

My youngest and oldest have been following him around from day one, and have told them to tell me when he does anything, every time he goes to the tiolet they tell me.

I give him some extra wet food last night not long after to maybe help it along. When he ate it the vets where closed so couldn't ring them It's been nearly 15 hours know , He was acting fine last night and been okay so far. He works like clock work and has very predictable habits, if I notice any change he will go straight to the vets. Even the slightes behaviour change, or anything like that he will be at the vets. I have the vets number on the fridge handy.

He is indoors only, and there's four of us in the house and we are all keeping a closer eye on him.

I will keep a very close eye on him and hope and pray he may have spit it up, poop it out or find the rest of it somewhere else. He might have only chewed on it but didn't swallow it, it hard to say.he has been known to do that.

But I will check his poop next time he goes for the next few days. I will keep you posted.
He is a little rascal at times.

Someone recently posted a similar issue with a cat possibly eating a hair tie: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/315740/my-cat-ate-a-hair-tie

Yes I read that one last night, where I got the idea from to give him wet food. He has had breakfast no problem and he's been drinking fine. I am in the middle of changing his diet to wet food anyway. Know I just play the waiting game. He poops like clockwork everyday and I guess in this situation the great thing is he doesn't cover his poop. He just scratches at the box . Which will make it easier for me lol. He has a cardboard box with his litter box inside with no lid so it doesnt keep the smell in

I'm glad he managed to pass both hair ties. One of my cats used to steal my hair ties and bury them in the garden, but at least she never ate one.

You're going to have to be OCD tidy to keep that boy out of trouble.

Yeah I think so, he reminds me of one my parents dog , he would eat anything and everything in site,
Found him eating poison once and rushed him to the vets, he lived for another 10 years maybe after that.

I swear bear is part dog lol, he sniffs everything and eats the wrong things.
I grew up with dogs but not cats I thought cats would be fussy eaters lol, not garbage guts lol.

This gave me a good laugh because that's happened in our household! Hair ties now go in an old tea tin. Ribbons and strings get cut off everything. Clothes with ribbons, strings, or cords get put in a closed drawer or closet. Bread gets shut in a cupboard. Plastic bags are shut in closets and drawers. Twistie ties for plastic bags just get thrown out. The garbage disposal in the sink gets run whenever there's something in it. The kitchen cabinet with the garbage bin has a magnetic closure thingy...

I could go on and on and on! I never had a cat who ate as much forbidden stuff as the two cats (The Garbage Girls) we have now! And I have also never checked the litter box so carefully for bits of ribbons and shoelaces. Leather shoelaces are, apparently, especially tasty. Shoes are now stored differently, too.

In any case, I'm glad Bear got rid of those hair ties!
