Casper has his 2 week checkup today after his teeth extraction. He still has fangs and bottom front teeth. The roof of his mouth looks great. He still has a small amount of inflammation around the stitches but the should start coming out soon.
So far he feel a lot better, he's put on weight quite quickly in past couple weeks. He won't touch dry food anymore demands his wet food so I will keep him on that. I just assumed he didn't like wet food but I'm sure now it was just his sore mouth. He only ate cause he had too :(
We go back in a month and 6 months for cleaning of the front teeth. I sure hope this stays his cure. Gonna start brushing his teeth after the stitches go. The vet recommended this solution you mix in with their water, he said has a fishy smell. A mouth care thing, geez I can't remember the name. It was 70 dollars for a tiny bottle and he said some cats won't drink water with it in there. Very expensive to just test out. Casper hasn't had much water since being on 3 x a day wet food. I would try it if I can find it cheaper. We are in Western Australia.
I hope anyone dealing with a sick kitty at the moment has a fast recovery!

I'm so sorry you've been through all this with your boy. I hope his mouth is healing up nicely :vibes:

The single best thing you can do for dental health is to brush his teeth daily, preferably with an enzymatic toothpaste/gel designed for cats and dogs. If you do that, water additives really shouldn't be necessary. As you say, cats on wet food tend not to drink very much anyway, so its debatable how much benefit you'd see. Water additives work much better with dogs, as they have a much stronger thirst drive :) [article="0"][/article][article="30206"][/article][article="30193"][/article]

Thank you,

I did speak to the dental vet about brushing. I will certainly try but I don't see him letting me near his mouth and I don't want to go back to him running from me every time he sees me. He's had such a hard time since January with pain and needing medication. He wanted nothing to do with me.

Poor guy :(

With the brushing, the trick is baby steps. When you're cuddling with him, start rubbing his cheeks and chin, then gently slide the tip of your finger in and rub a tooth or two a little. Tell him what a good boy he is the whole time, and reward him with a treat. That's it. Keep working like this, and gradually he'll get more and more accustomed to the process. The trick is to take it s l o w l y.

To start with, a microfibre finger brush will be the easiest. As his gums recover, a silicone finger brush will be easier to use the toothpaste with, but it will be bulkier. The great thing about the toothpastes is that they're fish or meat flavoured, and most cats really like the taste. They'll also work if they're simply smeared quickly onto the teeth, or even if licked off a finger or paw. Obviously, full brushing is the ideal, but just getting the toothpaste into his mouth will still give significant benefits.

If teeth cleaning really doesn't work, and he hates the toothpastes, you can get an additive to mix into the wet food. The most common one is Plaque Off. It works on the same principle as the water additive, but you can be sure that he gets the full dose every day.

Good luck. I hope Casper's fully recovered soon :vibes:
