Okay so today someone said you can kind of inbreed/line breed sphynx cats and the kittens will be okay? At first I thought erm no. But I did abit of google-ing and now I have no idea what is true, it says breeding mother son, sister brother is 25% breeding half sister half brother is 12.5% breeding half uncle half niece is 10% cousin to cousin 6.5% and so on. It states that 10% and below is "okay" just wondering what tothers input is on this subject? Id appreciate no horrible comments to be aimed at me as im not saying it is okay to do so.. im just unsure on the matter. Thanks. Hope iv posted in the right forum as iv only used the cat site once before :)

It's definitely preferable, and healthiest, to have no genetic relation.

I always thought it was a no no just down to the fact that the babbys could be born with life threatening deformations, but my friend who also own sphynxs thinks that breeding a male and female with the same dad different mother would be okay. I just dont know the actual facts about it, and dont know where to find facts as the internet is full of opinions opposed to factual information :)

It might not cause any malformations at birth, but generally half brother and half sister are still far too close together and later on in life they will not have good health.
Think about it as in terms of people, if it would be gross if people of that relation had children, then cats shouldn't do it either.

I'm going to ask the mods to move this thread to the breeding forum.  They may have the answers.

I have heard about the dad to daughter thing, but it's rarely done and not really accepted as proper breeding. It's done on rare occasions when the situation is attempting to establish a pedigree with specific traits. It should only be done with top quality cats and by breeders who know the family tree of their cats. That's all I really know about it.

I guess the main problem with inbreeding is the fact that they are from the same genetic background so they therefore carry the same genes for certain conditions. If there both carriers of a disease then breeding them todther will increase the chance of there children having this condition. It's plausible that some of the kittens would be healthy but I think the risk greatly out ways this. Personally I think the breeding of pedigree cats sgould be for bettering the breed itself. Interbreeding cats limits the gene pool causing greater problems down the line. I would suggest not listening to your friend lol.
