I can't seem to find a good cat litter for a multi-cat home.

I currently have three indoor cats, with enough litter boxes for each of them. But it seems like I've run into the problem of finding the right litter.

I've tried multiple kinds of Blue brand, but every kind doesn't clump enough. The "clumps" of urine break apart into smaller, unscoopable clumps.

I've also tried Arm & Hammer brand. But that one seems like it clumps way too much, and urine doesn't absorb very well into the litter, which makes it stick to the bottom of the litter box, and leaves my kitties with messy paws.

What are your favorite brands to use for kitty litter? This is my first time having indoor cats (I've had outdoor cats ever since I was little), so I'm not sure of the best route for picking out litter, especially since I've already tried multiple brands. I need something absorbent, clumping, and odor blocking.

Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks!!

I have a multicat household and also foster. I also have a very small house.

I use plain clumping clay litter. (Tractor Supply brand) I usually scoop the box twice a day and more if needed. That plan seems to be working well for us. I have 3 cats in under 900 square feet.

They'll have to pry my Fresh Step Multi Cat Clumping Litter with Odor Shield from my cold dead hand.

I'm never using anything else.

Dr Elsey's Precious Cat is really good. The only thing that I don't like about it is that it comes in a bag and not a box or jug. The cats tear the bag and it spills.

Fresh Step Extreme- you can't go wrong with this one. Clumps like a champ and it's an odor control powerhouse.

Tidy Cats lightweight- All TC products that I have tried are fantastic at odor control and clumping. You really can't go wrong with any of them but I really love the lightweight and I ever thought I'd say that. The clumps almost "float" in it. It makes scooping so easy.

Be carefuly with scented litters. Cats have really sensitive noses and may refuse to use the litter box if they deem the litter too hevily scented Perfumes added to the litter are just to appeal to our noses so we don't smell the pee and poop. You can mix plain baking soda into the litter to keep odors down.

Dr. Elsey's litter is popular.

I use regular Scoop Away.

Dr. Lisa wrote about her search for the perfect litter here: http://www.catinfo.org/?link=litterbox#Constantly_In_Search_of_the_Best_Cat_Litter

I use UNscented clumping cat litter, which is one of the ones recommended by Dr. Pierson. It's not the best option, she says, but it's FAR better than the scented ones and the hyperallergenic ones (like Swheat Scoop for one).  I don't have any odor in my home with the unscented litter.  But I did with the scented ones.  Cats don't like perfumey smells.  They get it on their paws and then they lick their paws.  That's not good for them.

I use KMart store brand, Cats & Co, unscented clay litter with baking soda. I also buy the Arm & Hammer baking soda powder and put it in the bottom on the boxes after I clean them. In my experience, with 6 indoor cats, the smaller the pieces of litter the better they coat and clump. The litter I buy is very fine, almost like sand. Make sure you're putting enough litter in the boxes so the cats don't dig to the bottom, that should help with any sticky mess underneath. I have tried Tidy Cat and Arm & Hammer and, to me, they don't control the smell as well and don't clump enough. My cats have never objected to scented litter, but I don't like strong smells so I don't buy it.

I have two cats, and was using a clumping clay litter that worked well, but I couldn't stand the dust everywhere. Also clay litter dust is breathed in by the cats while in the box. I can't stand to think what it would do to their lungs over time, noticing that when clay litter granules get a bit wet they kind of 'melt' into a sticky, hard-to-clean mess. Of course, I'm breathing that in also. I did a lot of research into other litter types and then decided to try some corn-based litter. I have to say that I'm really happy with the result- it clumps well, is very light to carry home, has no dust ( my whole condo is much cleaner as result) and it has a nice, light, almost sweet smell. The brand I use is President's Choice, which is from a Canadian company, but I'm sure it's basically the same as most other corn litters. I've read reviews saying there is a 'pine' smell with some corn litters- not sure what they are referring to, as there are no added fragrances in this one. The natural scent of the corn cobs covers up odors very well and I find it does not stick to the sides of the letterbox like clay.

Also found that since switching to a frozen raw diet supplemented with a good no grain/no carageenan canned food for when I'm at work has cut down significantly on the smell of their stools. I grow cat grass for them to chew on and they get a bit of canned pumpkin (NOT pumpkin pie mix) blended into their food. The grass and pumpkin are good for their gut bacteria. They have a cat fountain also- (CatMate) and they drink more water now which is great for them overall.

I also use a Litter Locker ll- what a life saver! I buy packs of generic refill bags at Walmart. Hope this helps.

I'm stuck with Dr Elsey's. It works great with my litter robot. Cat loves if and with my cat having allergies it doesn't bother her. What about a garbage can with a lid if you buy the 40 lb bags. I'm going to need one to organize. It would be nice with wheels.

I have three beauties and have tried almost all the cat litters out there I LOVE Tidy Cats for multiple cats. It clumps really well and does cover the odor The only bad part is the dust it causes when you pour it in the potty. I have tried the lightweight ones and hated it. My three stooges love the scent also Now they even play with the dryer sheets because it smells like their litter.

My cats are fairly picky as well.  They avoid scented litters like the plague.  They did OK with the Pet Valu store brand but we're getting the most success with Walmart's Special Kitty brand.  We get the UNscented, multi-cat, clumping litter.  It's fairly inexpensive too which is good for us.  As long as you keep the boxes clean the scent isn't bad and I don't think the dust is too bad either.

Last time out we did use Tidy Cats and I personally like it (no bad scent and no dust) but the kitties seem to have been avoiding it as they were using the box that still had the more familiar litter in it.  They still used the Tidy but not as often.

Recently tried Bosley's  Rainforrest  Cedar and Moss flushable cat litter...cats didn't like

it. Holds odor well tracks same as any.  Always go back to Pellets ( must be pet safe non toxic) for cost, odor, cats like it.

I like the Fresh Step Odor Shield personally. It clumps just the right amount for scooping, it doesn't get stuck in the fur and track all over the house, and it keeps the inevitable smell of the litterbox down. Most importantly (to me) the cats all use it and just about every store that sells cat litter around here sells it.

We swear by Blue Buffalo MultiCat Walnut litter (we have 16 cats-- yes, 16). It NEVER smells like cat in here (our landlord is always impressed). We scoop it throughout the day, and it always clumps well for us- we never have an issue with crumbling unless it's scooped less often. It's also cost effective. We used World's Best for years, but it was expensive and smelled pretty bad during humid summer months.

The brown dust is still a pain but EVERY scoopable litter is dusty. And I'd rather have walnut dust than clay dust, any day!

UN-scented litter, only! please!  I have seen cats with sore rears and even diarrhea that was healed by simply changing the litter to unscented. Not to mention, inappropriate peeing and pooping outside the box.  I have been very happy with Kmart's Cat&Co unscented clumping litter. It can be mixed with chicken feed (krumbles or mash) and if not allowed to stay damp, will have the benefits of corn-based litter with the performance of the clumping.

I use unscented light weight scooping litter-its in a blue and green container-with a handle to carry. it does track but they use the box all the time so I don't mind abit of mess if they go IN the box!

Dr Elsys litter is a good one. Don't use Glade scented products-I have seen many kitties come down with asthma because of these things-the chemicals irritate their lungs and just not good for them. As someone else posted=the chemicals get on their paws and they ingest it. Best to stick with UNSCENTED. If you scoop the litter twice a day you wont get odors. Dump the litter every other week at the minimum.
