Comet is getting neutered on April 15. He habitually is licking down there anyway, so I figure I'm going to need an e-collar. The vet was going to charge me $30. But isn't that kind of expensive for a piece of plastic?

Has anyone used the soft collars? Which types are good, what's not so good? Where do you buy them? How much? And the biggie......how long does he have to wear it? I need to find out soon because time is running out.

Thank you.

I've never used a cone for a neuter. It would only be necessary if he licks himself to the point of irritation---it's not like there will be anything to fall out! ;) A lot of neuters don't even have stitches. If you really think he needs one, though, you can get one at a pet store. Should be cheaper than what your vet charges.

Yes, $30 is very high for an e-collar. You can purchase one on Amazon for about $10-$12.

I've only used a soft collar once (not the inflatable kind) and the cat (a 6 month old) mutilated it. So, the staff ended up putting a plastic one on him.

I have had to use an e-collar after a neuter only twice, but not a bad idea to have one on hand since your guy is already a licker.

$30 seems expensive to me too.  I would either order one online ahead of time or pick one up at a pet store.
