I am switching my cat to crystal cat litter but stumbled across some articles that list it as being unsafe and would love some other opinions. I know that some forms of silica are extremely unhealthy but I didn't think that form was in the litter.

Does anyone have more information, or have cats currently using it?

You can find articles about pretty much every substrate used for litter and why that one is particularly toxic and unsafe. I don't know that there's any evidence for these claims besides anecdotal. I'm sure some cats react badly to certain ingredients, but that depends on the cat. I would be extra careful when trying new litters if your cat has a history of asthma or respiratory problems. If you want to try a new litter, keep an eye on your cat and see if they develop any new symptoms and be ready to switch back if necessary. I think the problems that have been noted with silica are mostly breathing issues from inhaling the silica dust, and also it is very drying (which is why it works as a litter so well) but it can dry out some cats' paws.

I've used Precious Cat silica crystal litter before and I had no problems, and I'd recommend it for cats that get other litters stuck in their fur. The cat was a six month old former feral kitten and he did great. No breathing issues, and he was in a weakened state from other illnesses at the time. I don't use it now because I do wonder if the texture might be uncomfortable for some cats, and my cat has had some litter box issues so I  want to be absolutely certain her litter is as inviting as possible.
