Hi there,

My little Snow is now 9 week old. I got her from the shelter 1 week ago and I have another 8 months cat at home called Nala.

So for 1 week Snow was very playful, dynamic and used to climb on me whenever I got to the kitchen in the hope she could munch on smth. I had to carefully portion her food because the first few days she was eating too much. She is close to my other cat and they have been playing (sometimes a bit too roughly in my opinion), grooming and she also attempts to milk Nala...

Yesterday in the evening, we noticed she was a bit down, her bowl wasn't empty, which is odd considering her appetite, and she had runny eyes (with a very small scratch around her eye, I think it happened while playing with Nala). Today, it got worse, she's been sleeping the whole day, didn't really respond to toys, almost didn't care actually. She hasn't been eating much either (just a very small portion of dry and wet food, maybe 1/3 of her daily ratio) and I haven't seen her drink either. She's been to the litter for number 1 once only but not number 2. Nala keeps grooming her and is sitting next to her. She also tried to play with her but the little one hide to sleep even more.

Nala is a feral cat, I got her off the street  when she was 2 months old but she's free of worms, doesn't have fleas and got a full range of injections since so I don't think she contaminated Snow with anything. Snow was dewormed as well before we took her and she's supposed to receive her first vaccine when she reaches 1kg so next week!

Do you think it is normal behavior for a kitten?

Nala was also lethargic when she was a baby but she was from the street and was infected with mites and scabies and was starving so that was more "normal" to me...

she sounds like she could be dehydrated and she could be constipated. she needs to be checked by the vet being constipate is a problem runny eyes could mean upper respitory infection she needs to be seen by your vet. dry food is not the best it can add to her dehydration.

I agree that she should see a vet. A 9 week old kitten should be full of energy. Sometimes a transition to a new home can bring out a uri. She may need antibiotics.

Are you feeding her food specifically for kittens? She should have constant access to food at this age.

In terms of the rough play between cats, they will teach each other manners and limits.

I think you are right, she might have uri, she has all the symptoms and she started coughing. But the good thing is she started eating again (and yes only kitten food) and playing ...

I guess it's gonna be antibiotics for the little one, I'll go to the vet today before she gets worse...

Thanks :)

Hi!

Yes I did, she has a respiratory infection without fever. I got antibiotics from the vet and after that she will get her 1st injection.

She's still very sleepy, doesn't appreciate the medication at all but is covered in lick by Nala who's taking good care of her ;-)

Apparently it's quite common when they come from the shelter

Thanks for your answers and concern :)
