I have two cats that I adopted in August. One is 3, the other is now 9 months. Up until the last month or so, they both used the litter box without issue. As of late, the kitten started peeing in random locations around the house instead of the box- most often in the kitchen. I added another box but he pees around it instead of in it(it's the tidy cat breeze system, I don't love the idea of them breathing in the dust). He poops in the box upstairs, but pees on the floor 7/10 times. It's so hard not to get frustrated with him, I know it doesn't help! I don't know what to do.
Please help!

The first thing to do is take the kitten to the vet for a check over. UTIs and other urinary issues can cause sudden litter box avoidance. He will need a urinalysis (and possibly a culture) done.

Also, is he neutered?

As CatPack mentioned, has he been to the vet and cleared of any medical conditions? Neutered?

I'll wait and see what your answers are to the questions above before I go on and on with my opinion and experience with the Breeze system. It only lasted a little over a month in our house before we got rid of it and went through many litter and box tests for our out-of-box peeing cat.

He's not yet neutered because I read neutering early has a higher incidence of kidney failure, I'll take him to the vet

I'm not sure where you read about early neutering leading to kidney failure? I've never heard this. The only thing Argument I have heard is in regards to urinary crystals due to lack of the urethra growing to full size. (Oftentimes "early" refers to kittens under 16 weeks of age.) However, at 9 months of age, he is more than old enough to be neutered.

If he is cleared of a medical issue, it is very likely your kitty has begun to mark his territory. It takes about 60 days for the hormones to completely leave the body after neutering. The marking typically subsides after neutering, but can persist as a habit.

I agree that neutering at his age is quite safe and will fix many of your issues. Please take him in to be checked for a urinsry issues. You can possibly do the neuter in the same appointment.

I agree with everyone. He needs to be neutered. It's most likely that he's marking his territory and it's not a simple aversion to the litter box. Best of luck and keep us posted!

I took him to the vet today and they took a urine sample which we'll get the results for tomorrow, but crystals are suspected going by what I clean up from the tiles (it crystallizes when it's dry). He doesn't have an obstruction and now he's on a special urinary diet, and also scheduled for the big snip on Saturday. Otherwise everything else looks good and he's a total ladies man [emoji]128525[/emoji]

Ok guys, Theo had been neutered and he is still on the prescription diet, but I hate the ingredients. He's currently eating hills prescription diet s/d and in about 6 weeks he'll be transitioned to c/d.
Does anyone have any grain free suggestions for struvite dissolution and maintenance?

Awww yay, speedy recovery little Theo! I'm sure others will chime in here, but I really hate the ingredients in Hills Prescription too. I can't believe it's the only food alternative that vets prescribe time and time again. How long does he have to be on it? We feed our cat only Nature's Variety Instinct, and we mix in about 2 tablespoons of warm filtered water each time. She also gets homemade food for lunch, also with warm filtered water mixed in.

Thanks coco! I was giving him natures variety instinct for months but then he developed the crystals. I'm not sure if this is just because he wasn't neutered yet or if it has anything to do with crystal cat litter or if he's simply prone to them. I definitely don't want to keep him on the diet, but the vet told me its lifelong. The vet also failed to give me an actual prescription so I would have to return to the vet every time I need to buy more and his prices are inflated. So far he's been on the s/d for just over a month and he's supposed to be on it for 3 total months before going to c/d. I'd rather not do this, and I'm willing to explore the option of homemade if anyone has some good suggestions!

He also didn't call me directly back to tell me that he has crystals, I had to call to ask. I'm not even 100% sure that he actually has them

How annoying! I can't offer any solid advice, but I think you should start a new thread in the Cat Health forum, and I'm sure responses will come in from those who experienced this kind of problem firsthand.
