I adopted a pregnant stray. I thought she was only a kitten herself. I knew she was pregnant after a few weeks with her. Two days ago we had 4 living kittens. They are quiet and she spends a lot of time with then, but I am concerned that she has enough milk. What are the signs in queen's belly, and I am assuming content kittens are getting enough food. How can I tell for sure?

The kittens would be crying if they were hungry.  Give mom as much food as she wants.  Wet and dry.  Nursing moms eat a lot.

Oh my goodness! Queen Ginger had 4 live kits, one was the runt for sure and we were afraid it wasn't getting enough to eat. I bought a bottle to supplement. It wouldn't take any. We placed the kit back with mom and siblings. It was alive but not very lively and seemed to nurse. This kitten is gone, disappeared. We are shocked. Since mom was a stray she goes outside at times. Could this kit have died and mom removed it??? Do they do this sort of thing? The other three are, seem to be doing well.

Please do not let mom outside at all until the kittens are weaned and mom is spayed! She can get pregnant again within a week of delivery, even if she doesn't go into heat. In addition, there is always the risk that she won't come back, or that she will come back with a parasite or disease and infect her kittens.

As for the one who didn't make it, it's possible that mom took it away from the nest or even that she ate it. As upsetting as it sounds, her instincts tell her to protect her babies from predators.

A baby with mom to nurse from will never take a bottle. If you need to supplement any others you will need to use a syringe or dropper. You can weigh them every day to make sure they are gaining enough.

Post photos when you can!

This was my first go round with a cat and one that birthed kittens a month after I rescued her. She wasn't more than a kitten herself. However, she was an absolute wonderful mother. Her last two kittens found a home two days ago. She has been calling them and looking for them everywhere, it breaks my heart. Do you know how long this usually continues? I am so sad for her. Thanks

I'm sure it takes at least a few days. It probably varies by cat too. I'm sorry she's upset and hope she's feeling better soon. [emoji]128522[/emoji]

How old were the kittens? I heard that moms don't get too sad if the kittens are old enough.

Probably separated too soon. Do you plan to spay mom now?
