Okay, leaving my lurking corner to ask an actual question here.

Around two weeks ago, I noticed my 6-year-old cat, Alice, using the litter box about 6 or more times an hour - this was combined with her deciding the rest of the house was fair game as well. So, I scheduled a visit with the vet the following day.

The vet took a brief look at her and said it was likely a UTI and sent me home with antibiotics to give her. While on the antibiotics, she improved greatly. But, within two days of the treatment ending - we were back where we started - Many litter box visits and many loads of laundry being washed because kids don't know to keep their clothing off the floor.

I scheduled a second apt with the vet and got the other vet.

He checked her over and said he felt nothing wrong with her - she wasn't acting like she was in pain, and implied that the cause was her just being jealous of the kitten (the kitten we've had for months and yet this problem only showed up within the last two weeks... yeah I was a little upset with that). He said he'd 'humor' me and give her a second round of antibiotics.

He gave the exact same antibiotic as the first time and said if I brought her back he was going to do X-rays.

They never tested her for anything, they just felt around her stomach and sent me home.

At this point, I don't know what to do anymore. This is one of the only low cost vets around me, and usually they're affordable enough, but I'm so tired of paying all the fees just for her to continue to be sick.

Anyone have any advice? I'm calling tomorrow to schedule an apt for Tuesday, since that's my next day off.

She's not acting like she's in pain or anything, just the rapid visits to the box and once again peeing on things around my bedroom.

Ugh... I'm at my wits end here. I don't have a lot of money as is, and the fact that he wants x-rays this time scares me due to the cost *head desk* you'd think they'd run a test on her urine instead of x-rays... idk.

One of my cats was recently treated for a UTI.  Based on what I have learned from others on this site and a discussion with the vet I added a new litter box in my master bathroom.  After I added the 2nd litter box in a new location the peeing out of the litter box stopped.  The vet mentioned adding a new litter box in a new location as a way to break the association between the pain caused by the UTI and using the litter box.

Perhaps adding a new litter box near where your cat spends the most time hanging out could help change the behavior.  Your cat may have associated the current litter boxes with the pain from the UTI.  I also used a variation of the same brand of litter in the new litter box and Sonny took to it right away.

I guess I am lucky that Sonny only peed on one piece of furniture and never on my laundry.

Did the vet run a new urinalysis to check if the infection was actually gone?  This was something my vet did for the follow-up visit.

That's the main issue - I've taken her in twice now and the vet never did any tests. They gave me the antibiotics and that was that. The second visit (a week ago) the vet completely blew me off and said he didn't think there was anything wrong but he'd humor me and give her a second week of antibiotics. Same Rx as the first week, same dosage everything - he never ran any tests on her beyond feeling her stomach to check if she was bloated or in pain.

I'm calling in the morning to see if they have any openings tomorrow, if not she'll have to wait until my dad can take her on Monday (which will go over so well with him lol).

I'm just tired because it feels like running in circles now. She was fine while on the antibiotics, seemed to be making a complete improvement over everything - then boom: right back to ground zero the day after she finishes her dosage.

I think this time I'm going to insist they run a test on her. I'm tired of paying so much money for them to basically charge me and do nothing.

Get some aloe juice from the pharmacy at Walmart for about $7 a gallon and mix it with her daily water. It cleans all the toxins from the kidneys and has no taste. I give it to my cat every day and she will be 23 this year. It is miracle juice

No need for an x-ray if they haven't done a urinalysis yet. The x-ray would show if she had a bladder stone or not, but is unlikely to show anything else. A urinalysis/culture is what you need. If there is an infection, this will tell exactly what antibiotic should be used to treat.

As for the answer the second vet gave...
Stress can lead to a condition called sterile cystitis. This is basically inflammation in the bladder/urinary tract that shows symptoms of being a UTI. Blood typically accompanies this, though not 100% of the time.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to invest in either some Feliway spray or a calming collar for this girl.

Thank you. I'll stop and get her that today.
Vet was closed early today, so she cant be seen again till Tuesday.
I'll try the collar and also switch her to just canned food to her a little extra water into her.

Usually I feed her one can and put dry food out for her to eat while I'm at work, but I read that it's not good for cats having issues.

I'll throw an update here on Tues :)
