How fast do you think this injury will heal? She is on antibiotics but when she eats she starts choking and can't breath cause there's a hole in her esophagus...
I would be very concerned about this baby aspirating, which would likely lead to a fatal pneumonia at her age.
If she were mine, I would remove her from mom while she heals and tube feed. This would be something an experienced vet can teach you. If your current vet cannot, contact other clinics in your area. I have tube fed before, but this is not something I would feel comfortable trying to teach someone over the Internet.
To answer your specific question of how long it will take to heal...
If you can avoid infection, typically 10-14 days, the same length of time it takes to heal from surgery.
She is in a separate box with a heating pad and blanket. We are syringe feeding her but she acts like she's choking and when we take it away she won't stop moving around looking for milk
How are you syringing her? Are you keeping her tummy down? If yes on tummy down and you are syringing her in the side of her mouth (placing a drop of milk into her cheek) and she is still chocking, then she does need to be tube feed. The tube is placed down the esophagus and down near the upper part of the stomach, which would by-pass her injury.
If she is coughing, it's very likely she has already aspirated. What type of antibiotic is she on?
We were doing it in the front of her mouth but we will try the side. She is to young for a tube she is only 3 days old. The vet said it would do more harm and possibly rip her esophagus more.
Just a note, I am not talking about surgically inserting a feeding tube. This would be placing a super small catheter down her esophagus at each feeding. Yes, there are risks, though small if done correctly (this is why an experienced vet or rescuer would need to demonstrate.)
Do try placing it in the side and see how she does. Go slow and put one drop in at a time. If she continued to choke (a likely sign she has aspirated), tube feeding needs to be considered. There are tubes small enough for even a 3 day old kitten. Your current vet just may not have this at their clinic.
Feeding tubes are used for brand new babies most often.
If she is being fed correctly, tummy down, head slightly raised and just a drop at a time, allow to swallow before the next drop, always in to the cheek area and never the mouth/throat, and is choking she is in trouble.
Tube feeding is scary at first, but the key is to measure it correctly, so no chance of it going in to the lungs and not the tummy.
Please talk to the vet about this, he/she will show you and likely measure it for you, going from the bottom of the lowest rib, along her body and up through her throat to the tip of her nose, measured from the side of baby.
Tube is tiny and soft, and the only way to save this little one.
I'm so sorry she passed away. Poor little one had a life far too short. At least you tried to help her, but sometimes these things are beyond our control.
