Three nights ago, my dad and mom found some kittens in my backyard(5) and when the kittens' mom saw my parents, she got scared and ran away! my dad, brother, and I gathered all the kitties (she left them all over the place, is that weird?) and put them in a box with a warm sweater under the kittens. 3 of the 5 have died and now the kittens are in my house, with a new cloth inside the box, and I have been feeding them with KMR. i've never dealt with kittens before, so i've tried researching a lot in the past few days to help them survive. recently, i tried stimulating the genitals of one of the surviving kittens because it had eaten earlier. after i stopped, the kitten seemed alright and then abruptly wouldn't move. I put it in my hand and began softly petting it and massaging its body and it started to move. now it's breathing shallowly and rapidly from its lower abdomen. i'm worried something's wrong with her? or is she just sleeping and this is normal behavior kittens? please help, i've been stressing over this for nearly an hour now :-(

(also it should be known my family and i tried waiting for the cat mom to come back but after 2 days with no sign of her, we brought the live cats inside so they wouldn't die of the cold like one of the cats did)

She's also shaking slightly and pushing her brother away from her.

Are you using a heat source, hot water bottle bottle, rice filled heated sock, or heating pad. Little kittens need heat or they will die. They also need to be warm before they eat or they cant digest the food.

How are you feeding them they need to be on their bellies head up. They need to be fed every two hours on the dot. No in between times. You also need to weigh them at least daily to make sure they are gaining.

Yes, warm kittens need to eat warm kmr every two hours. How much and how often are you feeding them? Fed one drop at a time into their cheek, stomach down and head slightly up.

They need to be stimulated before and after every meal.

Ouch. So they all are gone now??  Or is there still one for you to try and save?

Its not impossible there was some wrong with them, and the mom was on the verge of abandoning them -  and that is why she didnt returned.  They can flee when they got scared, but usually they do return soon enough and search anxiously.

Tx for trying!    There will surely be a next time. A spontan rescue as here, or if you so wish, in cooperation with a shelter or similiar.  At that time you will be better prepared.

they are unfortunately all gone :-( we found the father of the kittens dead in our front yard and saw no sign of the mother since the night we found the kittens. hopefully, i'll be better prepared in case this happens in the future.

Yes, I too wonder why did the father died.  If in an accident, or by some unknown reason - probably contagion.

If it was contagion, here you have the probable answer what happened to the kittens and prob mom too.

This is also a memento - beware if you have a resident!   have a quarantine with the rescued  if you arent sure they are reasonably healthy!   The only exception is if the resident is herself an  healthy ex-semiferale, and thus, with the immune system high above average.  In such a case, you can take the calculated risk and try with letting her or him help out with fostering.

A big tx for you being prepared to helping out.  Not all sagas end well and sweetly "happy end" - but more DO end well and sweet if we are doing what we can do.

I'm wondering if someone put rat poison out. It's a big problem in Florida due to rats who live around the citrus trees. Cats get it on their paws and ingest it when they lick their paws. It's lethal. And someone may have deliberately put it out to kill neighborhood strays. Or do you have coyotes? Just a few thoughts.

Yeah.  A poisoning, deliberate or not, is quite possible and not that unusual.  Terrible but less dangerous for inside only residents than a contagion carried home with a rescued cat.

And as you say, poisoning of the homeless, and somewhat also the outside going residents, isnt not at all uncommon.

So now when we mention it, we can have this as our working hypothesis here.

Horrible.

RIP little ones.

RIP to you parents of these small.

Big tx to those humans whom tried to rescue:      .@ssdeleon98 and her family.

Thank you for taking these tiny kittens in and offering them love and care.  The TCS team would like you to know that we are so very sorry for your loss.   As others have said, you did everything that you could to sace these little ones.

Threads are locked after someone has suffered such a loss, as a sign of respect. We invite you to place a tribute at  http://www.thecatsite.com/f/19/crossing-the-bridge  as an enduring testimony to the young family you opened your home and heart to.
