I am age 73 from the deep south USA. I’ve had cats all of my childhood and adult life, with the exception of a 20 year period while living at the apartment complex in which I now live. I am military retired and served 24 years as a Hospital Corpsman (medic) 8404/8472. I served 23 of those 24 years with the US Marine Corps. I had no combat experience.

While before living in an apartment complex I had 4 cats. Three of them were from the same litter and were named: Smokey, Blackie, and Pixie. The 4th cat was an orange tabby that my mother got somewhere and she for a reason that escapes me called it “seven”!

Smokey lived to age 24 and the others less. Only Blackie made it to 20. The rest passed away some years before and I do believe 2 were poisoned!!! All well very nice cats and were living both in and outdoors. They were all very well cared for and my mother made sure my cats and her Basenji (dogs)  were under the care of a vet.

Twenty years passed before I had another cat to call my own and that was Rex!!! He was a straycat who was around this complex and evidently was a “throw away”. He was looking for a home and a new human slave! There are plenty of feral cats around here and you can’t even get your hands on them but “Rex” was different and we got to know each other. Pretty soon I was allowing him in my apartment for food and later for longer and longer stays. So I talked to apartment management and we struck a deal on a “pet deposit”. The manager and owners are not really cat people and I knew that might be a problem.

Rex evidently is a fighter and when I got him he’d already lost an eye either to another cat or a racoon. He still goes out and this is something I cannot break. Rex is a huge orange Tabby and weighs in at 15 pounds. I have suspicions that he might be part Maine Coon since there was a pedigreed male Maine Coon living here. He belonged to a tenant here at the complex. While I have no proof that Rex is partly Maine Coon I think that because of his immense size and semi-long hair and other features that there is better than a 50/50 chance he’s part Maine Coon.

Additionally I both live and work at this complex and have been here for 20 years. In 2009 the manager here was retiring due to age and recently had a mild stroke. She cleaned the 2 laundry rooms herself and she offered me the job before retirement. It does not pay much but helps pay bills. I set me own hours and basically I am not supervised in any way! So I am the “Laundry Room Custodian” and thus is my nick “Custodian”!

Well I better quit since I have now bored all of you silly! I need to close out my information since I am expecting the apartment maintenance man over her to fix my hot water faucet in my kitchen. If it’s not one thing then it’s another …

Greetings from the North East. LOL

I take it that's Rex in the avatar pic...  He's beautiful.  He looks like he has Maine Coon in him to me, but there are a few experts on here who can help in that department.  15 lbs, he's a solid boy.  Do you know how old he may be?

Welcome.  I'm sure you'll find many answers.  As I'm learning, The Cat Site is a great source for feline info and the members are extremely helpful and kind.

Best to you and Rex.

Yes Rex is my avatar pic - much better than a shriveled up old man! lol As best I can figure Rex is about age 2 and this fits right in with the possible timeline for him to be part Maine Coon.

You see a neighbor in the next building over had a pedigreed Maine Coon. He didn't have a name and I named him Pebbles. He was an in/out cat like Rex. I knew Pebbles quite well & we were friends. He would come over & visit me at times. Pebbles was black and white - not orange like Rex.

BTW some people might not know the meaning of Rex. It is Latin and means king. Recently a boy here at the complex about age 8 heard me softly calling Rex and he said to me "why are you calling your cat a wreck"? I thought to myself - he's my wreck and I care for him very much!!!

Well, your "wreck" is lovely, and welcome to the site. I'm another Southerner, from Virginia, and a member of the UDC. I now live in Lincoln land! You will find many friendly people here with lots of good advice if you need it. We love pictures and kitty stories, so we're eager to see and hear more!

I rounded up a pic of Pebbles and here is what he looked like! I hate that more than likely he is no longer with us! :-( He did like having his picture made! :-)

OMG, what a beautiful kitty.  Pebbles reminds me of mine, but a furry version.  That expression is priceless. So sorry he's gone. Those eyes, I'm melting...
