Should I be concerned?

I have an inside kitty that is 1 1/2 yrs old that I have had since 12 weeks old which has been very healthy overall.  All of her siblings died within the first 16 weeks of life and the mother died last year, all of unknown causes.  I have kept a very close eye on this baby, probably jumping the gun and running her to the vet over not serious things....but better safe than sorry.  My question is this:  my little girl a few months ago started to breathe with her mouth open when she was running hard around the house playing.  I immediately took her to our vet that in turn took x-rays and blood work, she suspected maybe asthma, but everything came back fine except for Basiphil level was flagged for being slightly elevated. I was told to keep an eye on her but otherwise there was nothing else to do. My little girl acted fine, ate well, played and groomed so I quite worrying. Yesterday however while she was playing hard with another kitty I noticed that she was breathing out her mouth again (only a couple of times) then stopped. Should I be concerned or am I being an mom that worries way too much?

I don't know much about your question, but I have to say, I am curious. Does your kitty have allergies? Was that mentioned when the blood test was ran? my understanding is that Basiphil is part of inflammatory reactions, usually allergies. Don't quote me on that, but it is just something I recall.

Thank you for the article, I did read it at the time the blood tests results were in....good information,  I suppose the kitty could have allergies.  I guess that I will have to just continue to keep a close eye on her and if I notice any other symptoms I just take her back to the vet.

You are very welcome! I don't recommend substituting information on any site from your vet. this is a great site for information, but I would at least call the vet's office and tell them the problem is still ongoing. It can't hurt, but just use advice from sites as added information. Always keep your vet informed of any ongoing, or new symptoms! You are not over protective, just a great, caring fur mommy!  Let us know what your vet thinks, please.

I am just checking in to see how your kitty is doing today? Did you call the Veterinarian? I hope someone with more knowledge than myself replies too.

Hi...I did not call the vet yet but watching my little girl very close, she has not had anymore episodes of the open mouth breathing since the other day.  If anymore occur I will definitely have to call to take her in....just hate jumping the gun and having another several hundred dollar expense only to be told that she (vet) can find nothing.  Will keep everyone updated.  :)

I am so glad to hear that she has not had anymore issues!

Are you able to call and speak with them, at the very least?

I know some vet's office will let you speak with the doctor, and others do not.

I am glad you are going to continue to update us!

Do you have a picture of her?

What is her name?

I do have a good rapport with the vet office luckily, in fact I have the vet's cell phone number to reach her 24/7.  If any more issues arise I will definitely call them to get her in, I guess I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem.  My little girl's name is Hannah, I have enclosed a picture of her a month after adopting her (she was 1 lb 6 oz) and now, as you can see she has grown up and is now around 10 lbs.

Oh my goodness!! she is such a beautiful girl!!!!! Wow, those eyes! :-)

Awe, that is such a beautiful name! :-)
That's awesome that you have such a great rapport with your veterinarian! That should really help with any concerns that you have if something happens before you can get Hannah to the vet. Not many veterinarians these days will do that.

I understand what you mean about wondering if anyone else has gone through the same situation. I was hoping somebody would come along that had experience. Hopefully, someone will soon. unfortunately, I don't. I just wanted to offer my support. I am always here if you need anything.

Thank you so much....she is a very special little girl which I adopted on my birthday.  My birthday has been a sad day for many years as my dad passed away on my 25th birthday.....this was my special gift to me to give a different remembrance to that day!

She's so cute!

I would definitely think it is allergies or asthma related. It sounds like you are being very cautious and that is good.  I had a cat that had allergies before but no breathing issues just sneezed a lot and never really did figure out what the allergies were just that having the windows open during the warmer months seemed to trigger it. Figuring out what a cat is allergic to is hard.
