I  have taken in a stray kitten. He was sick and starving. He is now all healthy, neutered and has his shots. However, he WON'T use the litter box and I am at my wits end. I too have tried everything. I too love the little fellow, very loving but I feel I will be forced to take him to a non-kill shelter. He goes out in the house. We are going on 2 months now and it is just not sanitary. :(

Have you tried keeping him in one (small) room? A bathroom or the kitchen usually work best because the floor is easy to clean. Just keep him there with all he needs: food, toys, litterbox. And don't let him out until he's learnt - as long as is necessary.

I take in feral kittens (6 weeks old) and confine them in a dog carrier with a small litter box and keep them in until they know what is expected of them and have got accustomed to me. Usually in a couple of days I can let them out into a larger enclosure. Once they start thinking they can go in every corner of the room, then it is more difficult to stop them. I've only had a bit of a problem when I had to keep very young kittens (bottle fed) in my living room. I had no dog carrier and they would jump out of the enclosure. My living room is big and I had 3 litterboxes but they would still just go where they fancied. But, at 10 weeks old they were all clean and 2 weeks later went to their new homes.

Good luck.

Everywhere he has gone somewhere inappropriately you have to clean it up with an enzyme cleaner so the smell is completely gone.

Second, I would definitely confine him to a room with two litter box options. I would use a combination of cat attract cat litter to draw him to the box and some dirt. If he was used to going outside, he may do better if the litter feels more normal to him.

He needs litter box bootcamp, but I think he'll get it!

I had the same problem with Indie when we first got him.

He used to have accidents all over the place -- behind the sofa, under the kitchen table, everywhere! But I'd suggest seeing if you can find a place where he does it the MOST and put a litter-box there. Also it would help if you put some of his poops in the litter-box too, that made Indie realise that was his toilet almost instantly! Also, whenever he does a plop in his litterbox give him a treat!

You'll probably have to watch for the signs when he's about to do his business as well. Watch for squatting, digging, or spreading his legs, as well as sniffing around a certain area and pawing at it. As soon as he does any of these things, lift him up and put him into the litterbox.

Also, maybe he doesn't like the cat-litter? Has he ever tried actually going in the litterbox at all or?

I think with lots of praise and treats and motivation he'll soon learn! Also instead of throwing his poops out put them in the litterbox you want him to go in and put him in the litter-box as well so he can see that thats where he should go to the toilet. It'll be great if he starts to cover up his poop with the litter when you put him in the box, too!
