Did you ever forget to serve a side dish?

On Easter, we were gathered around the table. As we sat down, I said to my SIL, "You know, I keep thinking I'm forgetting something." But the table was full of food and we sat down and had our dinner.

As we were cleaning up from the meal, I walked over to the stove. And what I said was
. There was the skillet of sweet potatoes with the lid still over the pan. And we never missed them.

So I put them into a bowl and we had sweet potatoes with our dessert! I wasn't going to let them go to waste! So I told everybody they had to eat at least one spoonful of potatoes. And they did!

Have you ever forgotten to put something on the dinner table after you've cooked it?

Frequently!

On Easter, which we don't personally celebrate but it's always nice to prepare a special meal, I totally forgot about making the buttermilk biscuits I swore I was going to bake.  Just totally vegged out about them.  Which was too bad because fresh biscuits would have been awesome with the ham we had and even better for leftovers!

I've done what you've done too, and had the missing side dish later on

We have forgotten to cook something; but not forgotten to serve. That I can remember anyway!  I've started making checklists on my blackboard for things like that.  Of course that ends up in the background of pictures and things too though.

I used to make a lot of congealed salad with Jello, sour cream, fruit and nuts, etc. More than once I forgot to take it out of the refrigerator and put it on the table.

The old school Jello mold!!

I was talking to someone at work about those about 6 or so years ago and when I got home, I asked DH if he remembered them. He asked, "Why? Do you have one?" I said, "Yeah, it's in my back pocket. No- I don't have one. "

When I saw the same co worker the next day. she told me that when she got home she asked her DH if he remembered them and he asked, "Why? Do you have one?"

My mom used to make those for holidays in the 70's. They were good.

I also remember savory ones but I don't recall this one:

The Vienna Sausages take it to a new level. The only thing missing is some cooked, crumbled Spam on top.

I was reading this thread yesterday and knew I had done it but with a bad memory I couldn't recall the last time I done it. Then I got in the fridge and seen the cole slaw. I forgot to put it out at my Easter dinner. Only after everyone sat to eat did I remember. LOL

Except for the fact that it's probably served cold, it's probably not terrible. I used to love Spaghetti O's as a kid and my favorite ones had the little hot dogs in them. If you cut that up, it would essentially be the same thing. I think it probably looks stranger than it tastes. My DH and my DD used to eat the Vienna Sausages when she was small. I bought a can of sliced ones for her at Dollar Tree the other day. She hasn't had them in years. She's looking forward to trying them again.

This mold is tame compared to some others I've seen. I haven't had a fruit one in decades. Those were good especially with strawberry, raspberry or peach jello.

There was one jello mold I remember that I really liked.  It had lime jello, cream cheese, pineapple and pecans in it.  They seem to almost have completely disappeared.

I like vienna sausage and I love potted meat though its been a while since I seen it. My oldest daughter also loves the chicken ones. The spaghetti o's is something I just can't stomach.

Check Dollar Tree. I saw potted meat next to the Vienna sausage when I was there on Saturday. The potted meat was 2/$1.00

I also remember eating Underwood deviled ham sandwiches as a kid. On white bread with American cheese and spicy brown mustard. Haven't had that in many years.

I don't remember the ham but have you ever had Banner Sausage. I love it. You can't get it in Ohio but every time I go to KY I make sure I eat it at least once.

There are several comedy articles about "I made this jello mold thing from a 1950s cookbook, actually ate it, and lived to tell about it!" :lol3: They're hilarious. Some of the things in those old cookbooks were so awful. I'm not sure what they were thinking back then.
