How do I get a smiley to appear in the column next to the envelopes next to the forum topics? On this page even, the message icon is checked for no icon and I didn't check it and can't uncheck it. How do I go about getting that no icon unchecked and is that the problem?.

You click on the icon you want to appear. That 'unclicks' the 'no icon' message. You only have a choice of the 14 shown. It only appears next to the envelope if you started the thread. Otherwise, it's in the title line of your post, like the blue paw you'll see on mine.
