Mind if I rant a bit? Petco has certain flavors of Wellness 3oz cans (turkey, turkey & salmon in the sliced & minced varieties) for .98/ can instead of $1.49. They are also running a "buy 6 get 1 free", except you can't get the ones on sale for the deal. I found this out during checkout. Does anyone else find this aggravating??

It sure is frustrating when the items you want to buy don't qualify for a deal!  Were the $0.98 cans on clearance by any chance?  If so, they shouldn't have been labeled with "Buy 6 Get 1 Free."  And if they did have the promotion tag, then the store should have honored the discount!

Looking at the positive side, at least $0.98 a can is cheaper than buying 6 cans at $1.49 and getting 1 free! :)

Make sure you check the expiration dates on those cans before you feed them. I have found some outdated from as far back as May 2014.

There's a pet store near me that I go to frequently. Partly because they often have cans on clearance. But you do have to check the dates and the condition of the cans as they can be dented and I just don't trust that. If a food is nearing it's expiration date, I'll still buy it and just use that up quickly. But I won't buy something that's actually out of date.

I found about 15 cans of Merrick chicken casserole at Petco over the weekend that were almost a year outdated. I brought them up to the register

Back to the original question (if I read it right), it's really fairly common to only be able to apply one discount to a purchase.  I worked retail for years. and every sales ad had a note "only one discount per item unless otherwise noted."  It's a pain, but keeps them for selling at negative profit.

According to the USDA website, canned foods are safe as long as the can is uncompromised, for quality they don't recommend going past 2-5 years. And it's not illegal for a store to sell canned foods past their best-by date. The date that's put on the cans is entirely up to the manufacturer. Anyway, if you can find a good price on "expired" cans, go for it! Too much food is wasted because of meaningless dates.
