Last November we took in a cat that tested positive for FIV. The intent had been to TNR but once we got the FIV news we knew we couldn't release him back out. He also had some kind of seizure and was very very ill. Hes been doing much better however about a month ago he started meowing crazy loud on and off like he wants to go outside. No way are we letting him out ever again but that crazy super loud meow has got to stop lol. Sometimes it happens when he sees the strays outside but it can happen anytime(he loves doing this between 1:00am-4:30am). Is it possible neutering would help? We don't want to put his help at risk so we are just weighing out the options. He's got the feliway stuff and a private room lol

Neutering will absolutely help and will actually be much better for his health. Our rescue has spayed/neutered several FIV+ kitties. Since you have concerns, I'd suggest doing a blood panel prior to surgery. You just want to make sure he is healthy and not have any underlying issue.

Great thank you for the quick reply. Poor little guy, we had been trying to catch him a long time. At one point he almost lost his voice and he has a very lengthy raspy loud meow. Yes,we plan on giving him a full check up before anything else. We joke about him yelling as if we are holding him hostage and how he's giving us a bad name around here lol

I don't think there are any issues with neuter and FIV. Some vets prefer to do a blood panal prior to see if any issues prior . I've heard that it can take a month or so until the hormones calm down. That will help with the roaming and yowling. I think kitty will be really happy to be indoors on rainy cold snowy days. Thank you for taking in this kitty. He is very handsome.

FIV positive cats can definitely be neutered! And as has been mentioned, he will be happier when his hormones are gone and are not giving him the urge to roam and fight with/mate with cats he sees. It's wonderful that you've taken him in and he will definitely be healthier for it. If he ever did get out, his chances of transmitting the disease would be drastically lowered if he was neutered, because the kind of aggression it takes to bite hard enough to transmit the virus is typically only seen in intact males.
